Re: Brad Symes Announces Retirement
One would assume that if he received numerous concussion since junior football and in the AFL the AFL players association will be helping out with his on going care....

“But as disappointed as I am I still understand it is a football game.
“He didn’t walk up to me in a pub, punch me and break my jaw.
“It is a contact sport and it’s not like we’re never going to speak again, I just felt like I owed it to the boys (teammates) to work out what I was going to do before I spoke to the media or him (Grocke).”

Re: Brad Symes Announces Retirement
Magarey Medallist, 2 premierships and handy AFL career. Had some bad luck, but character shines through. Congratulations on your career and best of luck in your future ventures.

Bounce of the ball wrote:Unfortunately for Symes this wasn't the first head knock. Maybe that needs to be taken into account as well. Yes the game has changed but was it that bad ? Least he didn't cop gutless ones from behind or in packs .Ironic.
Up there as one of the snidest post I have read on a footy forum. Please explain the Irony in Symes announcement. The interview that you quote is more a testament to his character than a defence of that ^.

Wrong. They have the rule right in the context of thuggish acts where hitting the player is the sole intent - as was the case in the Symes/Grocke incident. They have it wrong if they are going to view football collisions, in a contact sport, as an illegal act - as it seems they are with Viney/Lynch.
The Symes incident has nothing to do with the current debate about legislating the bump out of the game.

I was more talking about them being shit scared of concussions ruining people's careers. Just because this happened to be an act of thuggery doesn't mean it couldn't have happened in some other manner to end his career.

Re: Brad Symes Announces Retirement
We have to expect collisions in our game...its a collision sport.
Cases like Viney's have to be dismissed.
Firstly...he couldnt stop for the threat of doing a knee.
Secondly...he couldnt spin out of the impact, as again, threat of doing a knee.
Players arent superhumans. They are limited by the mechanics of the body and mind.
All Viney could do was stay low and try to NOT hit him in the head....which he did.
Appeal upheld i reckon.

Agree with everything you said. Don't think it will get overturned though unfortunately.

If the appeal loses then the games buggered. They've changed a fundemental unwritten rule of the game...make a contest..fairly.
I liken it to changing batting so you get one chance in cricket, or in baseball five strikes and you are out.
I hope common sense prevails here.

Re: Brad Symes Announces Retirement
Surely they couldn't name him in the 21 and put him on the bench for the whole match (like Schelly) or put him in the back/forward pocket for 5 minutes away from the play. Didn't they do that for Wakelin back in the early 2000s???
