Bell joins Carlton Draught State Squad
Wednesday, 29 April 2009 17:22

Former Fremantle Football Club captain Peter Bell is one of the latest additions to the Carlton Draught WA State Squad after scintillating performances for South Fremantle over the last fortnight.

Bell has been joined in the WAFL’s State Squad by recent inclusions Brent LeCras from West Perth, Rob Young from East Fremantle, Subiaco’s Aiden Parker and East Perth’s Trevor Oliver.

The squad gathered for its second training session at Subiaco Oval last night (Tuesday, April 28) as preparations are ramped up for the State clash with South Australia on May 23.

A strong squad spearheaded by Bernie Naylor Medallist Brad Smith and former AFL goal-sneak Jeff Farmer will host the Croweaters at Medibank Stadium on Saturday, May 23, with the game set to bounce down at 12.40pm. (2.10pm SA Time)

The squad has been selected by WA coach Scott Watters (Subiaco), assisted by fellow league coaches Tony Micale (East Perth), Chris Waterman (Peel) and Shane Woewodin (East Fremantle).

Micale will also act as backline coach, Waterman forward line coach and Woewodin will focus on the midfield as WA aims to restore State pride against the South Australians, who won the last encounter by 17 points at Adelaide Oval three years ago.

Tickets for the game are on sale now through Ticketmaster. To book online visit: http://www.ticketmaster.com.au/promo/81k28o

I'll say it one last time... McGregor is very unlucky not to be in the squad.

Three additions to the squad, announced this afternoon:

Brett Zorzi (Norwood)
Chad O'Sullivan (CD)
Craig Evans (St)

North's Andrew McIntyre has withdrawn from the squad, due to scheduling conflicts between the game and his law exams.

From the SANFL web site...

SANFL web site wrote:The SANFL has announed the following additions to the State team squad for the match against WA on May 23

Daniel Stewart – NAFC

Ruory Kirkby – GFC

Ryan Ferguson – WAFC

I would say Stewart and Kirkby are to cover the loss of Centrals Daniel Havelberg while Ryan Ferguson's continued good form has no doubt forced selectors to add him to the squad. They may now look to use Damon White in forward role and have Ferguson cover White at CHB. I think both Stewart and Kirkby are in good form but both may be fighting for the same spot as the 2nd or 3rd tall forward.

Like Danny Meyer from Glenelg, North Adelaide's Daniel Stewart is eligable to be in the squad as they are only rookie listed AFL players, both of course with Port Power, while West Adelaide aligned Chris Schmidt is also in the squad and is a Crows rookie. I'm sure there will be a few dissapointed Eagles fans that Ken McGregor was again overlooked to be added to the squad.

Did i read correctly? Have the state selectors worked out what us westies supporters have known for a long time, Ferguson is a superb CHB?

Perhaps winning the game for us against Norwood and then 26 possessions and 14 marks against Central might have woken them up at last.

Perhaps also they might have been reading my posts ;)

Based on the form of ruckman from games played last weekend, for the second consecutive year, the Bays Trevor Cranston is the unlucky one IMO. Watched the North v Glenelg last night and Trev was clearly the best big man on the ground.

For me, Parry isn't in the greatest of form of his career at present (as admitted by his coach and State Assistant Clay Sampson) while Dabrowski hasn't been setting the world on fire from what I've seen, read and heard. I think James Miekeljohn (Port) and Cranston (Glenelg) would make a great combination to take on the Snadgropers.

Yep, agree on Cranston and also McGregor.

Good to see Stewart get selected (praying for no injury), he is a difficult match up.

I'll put my club bias aside and say that I agree. Dabrowski has been average at best for the Eagles this season. The coaches of this team have clearly picked this team with their own interests of winning the game at the forefront of their mind. IMO the selectors should be picking the best in form players in the comp not just the ones with the biggest reputation from years gone.
Sorry Dobba!

the lads looked good

skills were quite good, bit of chatter - no signs of animosity
