Cutter - I think North beat us by a similar margin last year.

Havent heard the official crowd figure yet - was it disappointing for a game between 2 flag favoutites?
Players win touches, Teams win matches, Clubs win Premierships.

What was Sturt's combined winning margin across the four grades?

Central tried valiantly. Sturt too professional, cool in crises and more composed. Chambo kicked atrociously but he'll atone at Prospect next Saturday :D :D :D

Thomson was brilliant. Sheedy his cool, reliable, dependable self

Central were fast out of the blocks leading 2 to zip early

Sturt re-grouped, played team-orientated footy and were deservedly leading at 1/4 time.

Great to see all Sturt players, officials etc. wear black armbands as a tribute to the wonderful, Bob Vale. A legend at Unley and in his professional life too.

I was emotional yet again and sang the Club song with gusto :D

Looking forward to the Clash at Menzies Avenue next week.

Damian Squire, one of my favourite Sturt players of all time was back at the Club. great to see ya Squizzy 8)

A special mention to "Fish" Herring. This young man is improving each game he plays for the Mighty Double Blues. Plant is a cool, respected full back, James McLeay a solid CHB.

see ya Saturday Wedgie :D

Go U Blues!!!

It is interesting that only a couple of people have mentioned the performance of the umpires.
No one has suggested they had a bias toward either side, that is a considerable improvement on past seasons.

For my part I think the umpiring has improved markedly this year.

The umpires are protecting the player going for the ball or with the ball, much improved.

In recent years we have seen the interpretation of the rules to be penalising the player with the ball eg. the mess they made of the holding the ball rule. Now if you have the ball it is up to the opponent to win the the ball fairly. Only if a player is clearly caught with the ball will he be penalised.

The other major improvement I see is that the umpires are no longer afraid to pay a free kick in front of goals. If a free kick is there it should be paid regardless of where the infringement takes place.

If anything I thought the umpires missed a couple of free kicks later in the game.

But overall well done to the umpires, you have got it right now

Any one having comments of umpires performance at other games

Scarlett my friend, i don't know what game you were at, but I have read plenty of comments on this an other forums that all agreed :

- The umpiring in the Central v Sturt game was very inconsistant BOTH WAYS...

- They over umpired or "policed" the game too much

- They were very whistle happy with the 25 metre penalties BOTH WAYS

- Colin Rowston is AN ABSOLUTE JOKE, how he got an AFL gig is beyond me... ?

- The standard of umpiring HAS NOT & WILL NEVER improve, it will always be anything but mediocre...

- They still are and will always be WHITE MAGGOTTS !!!

That's just a breif summarisation of the current standard of umpiring at SANFL level, at least in my opinion anyway.

By the book i think alot of the 25 metres were there for touching the player after he took the mark.
BUT in most cases the player had already taken two steps and the umpire was slow with his whistle. Players were caught in two minds as whether to grab the player hoping the ump would call play on OR let his player get a three step advantage and probably get dragged by the coach.

CDFC have been the masters of doing this for years. Congratulations to the umpiring fraternity for finally cracking down on it.

So you've seen every Doggies game "for years" Topsy, to know that this is the case ??? I think we are good at stetching the limit to the very enth degree, without over stepping the mark (pardon the punt !!)

I personally think the umpiring fraternity have decided that they want to try and replicate the precision of AFL umpiring, paying everything that is there and really knuckling down on player infringements. What I think this is doing, is it's forcing the SANFL umpires to try too hard and therefore it's coming across very much as over umpiring. Unfortunately the opposite affect is occuring because they are actually slowing the game down to the point where the over policing seems to be dominating the game.

Anyway, all I hope for is that Central's don't get Colin Rowston officiating at ANY more of their games for the rest of the season... !!!

It used to be a bit of a toss up between Richard Williams and Tim Pfeiffer for my most hated umpire, but now I have a new number 1 thanks to Mr & Mrs Rowston. You watch, I bet for the Central v Norwood game the 3 umps will be ROWSTON, WILLIAMS & PFIEFFER !!! That'll be calma !!

Phil,
just a question.
Is it the umpires fault how the are interpreting the rules, or are they confused because the rule makers keep changing the laws of the game and pick on a different rule for the umps to look at during the season?

There is no common sense shown by the umpires and they are way to slow to call play on. At times the players were taking 4-5 steps horizontally before the umps would call play on. Obviously as a player if you let your oppositons run four steps sidewards on you and you just stand there the coach is gonna drag you.
IMHO the umpires were more concerned with having the player standing the mark on the exact blade of grass the mark was taken rather than watching when the player plays on.

You aren't an umpire yourself are grant j... ?

Is that an alias for one Colin Rowston !! ??

I get your point mate, still doesn't mean I think the umpiring was up to standard...

Whilst Rowston isn't a favourite of mine I thought yesterday's performance was on par with his usual standard maybe slightly better IMO. He was consistently bad.....

I often wonder of the directives given out by the panel to interpret some rules of the game

Don't see too many from this site bothering to have a go at umpiring. Its soooooo easy from sitting behind a key board.

Thought Col was OK last week with us certainly wasn't perfect but he let the game go to an extent and paid free kicks to the bloke first to the footy like he did in last years Elim Final.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!
