went to a couple of Port v Sturt games in '99 didn't feel half as special as Bays v Port - to me
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I went to Port v Sturt at Unley last year and it was not a feeling/atmosphere I'd encountered since the 80s.

Yes, Port/Sturt and Port/Norwood are the best ones IMO

Port/Glenelg also a good one as is Port/Centrals in more recent times

mmm there's a common link there

Others come and go .... I don't feel the Glenelg/North one is that big a deal anymore. 10 years ago Centrals and the Eagles wouldn't have been one, now they are ..

Based on banter on this site North/Sturt and Glenelg/Sturt are possibly newly emerging ones

South/Glenelg given their locations maybe one for the future
In between signatures .....

Central v Woodville-Torrens.

I would add North v Woodville West Torrens to that list that rivalry is really starting to build now.

I honestly dont see any rivalry between North and the Eagles. We don't have any rivals as such, used to be the Bays until they (and we) were s***t for so long.

I agree with one of the previous posters.

I disagree wedgie. There's a lot of heat in the Eags and Cocks clashes of late that combined with the 2 finals last year the intense battle between fans on this site it's really a rivalry that's set to sizzle in the near future. Watch this space. I think it will start again this weekend when we knock your cocks off your own purch.

I would say Port V Sturt in recent years has felt some renewed passion after the 98 finals series.

Port V Norwood is the oldest in the league, but I think Norwood V Sturt has alot attached to it for the supporters of the two clubs.

Four reasons why I think Port v Glenelg should be considered;
1/ Finals clashes since the late '60s, especially GFs in '77,81,88,90 & 92,
2/ Graham Cornes dressing room speech after the '90 GF,
3/ David Granger,
4/ Port's AFL bid in 1990.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

The Sturt/North game at Unley last year seemed to have an air of anticipation surrounding it, it was a good day weather wise, but there just seemed to be a big day of footy ahead. Well attended by punters on both sides which I've gotta applaude the north fans for, so I'll back in a good rivalry for North and Sturt, also add the flow of gun players that have seen the light and moved to Sturt. :D
And , yes there will be a huge expectation anytime when Sturt play the Bays this year.
Port/Sturt seems to have dropped off as Port have slided. Great last year beating them in ol' Albertstown. :D

LMAO!!!

Back on topic, there's a bit of Sturt vs Port talk on here.
Sturt sort of relinquished a claim to its super power status with those 8 years we had beginning 1989. Since then there was only a brief period where Sturt and Port were on song at the same time, then Port slid a bit. In fact, when Sturt finished 8th a couple of years back (our first dud season in a few years) was the first time Port made the finals in quite a while. So on one side of the coin there haven't been so many occasions for big clashes between two in form Port and Sturt outfits recently.
On the other side of the coin, the Sturt vs Port grand final in 1998 was an awesome spectacle. It was my first Blues, Magpies Grand Final. You could feel the two old foes reaquainting themselves through the energy coming from the crowd, and a lot of the crowd looked old enough to have been at the last 1976 meeting between the two sides. Talk of that day 32 years earlier was a hot topic between the two sets of fans, I witnessed some red hot arguments just about each time that year was mentioned.
Overall I think we are up in grand finals vs Port, I know that since the 60's we have claimed 4 Magpie scalps on Grand Final day, while they have claimed just 2 Double Blue scalps. Before our Golden era I believe we got a couple of other grand final wins over Port also. Perhaps we could once have laid claim to the greatest rivalry on that basis, but as I said, we have since been missing each other too often.
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail

Stating the obvious, but these rivalries take time to develop. Think over the last 3-4 years there has been a healthy repsect between the two teams due to both being high up on the ladder and some close games, but for a true rivalry reckon there would have to be a couple of GF's in there as well.

Meaning there is not a proper rivalry there at the moment, but has the potential to develop into one over the next 3-5 years.

1982 Dave Granger basically belting anything in black and gold after half time in the '82 Prelim Final - allegedly he was worded up to go and do it by the Port coaching staff.

My memory is hazy but wasn't he the culpritt in knocking our Twiggy Caldwell in the '81 GF?

Cornesy after the 1990 GF on national TV - the GF was televised nationally then, following the Port for AFL bid - basically said that "some people in this room (it was done in the Port changerooms as is the tradition) had a lot to answer for as SA Footy was never going to be the same" - or words to that effect.

A voice in the background is heard - telling him to "F*** Off". Port people on this site be able to confirm but it sounded like Choco's voice.

He revealed on Fox footy a couple of years ago that as he walked to the rooms that he suggested Bone should talk first as not too many people in there are going to like what I say....

I would say that as a South supporter I like to see us beat Glenelg, and I am well aware that the case is the same for many Bays fans in reverse! Considering that Glenelg flogged us at our first game at Noarlunga I think that has definatley fueled the fire. Going back, John Schneebichlers departure to the Bays led to somewhat of a flame war, so I think that South - Glenelg are a good case for a rivalry situation!

Most clubs have a rivalry with Port - comes with their success I suppose, 36 Premierships probably does that to other teams! Still Central are well on the way to getting there and I am not confident that they have built up any really significant rivalries as such outside of Port!

Thanks Tassie. I remember the SANFL GF's being televised in Victoria for a few years in the late 80s. Was usually on the day my local club conducted the B&F count/pissup so we all got plastered and supported players we knew bugger all about.

What do you call Eagles v Central then. That has to be considered a rivalry and a big one at that. 5 Grand Finals and all. It could be said that the 2 clubs hate each other.

Maybe some of the old "torrens supporters could shed some light on this but I recall reading somewhere that pre-1960, Torrens were the 2nd most supported team in the league behind Port and the rivalry between the 2 teams was huge.
