Flamin ridiculous. Perhaps they should concentrate on getting this comp right.

Could be an attempt to recover some of the money the womens footy is haemorrhaging.

The sanfl did it back in the early 90s to replace pre season comp. I remember going to see Eagles v centrals on a tuesaday/Wednesday night play the grand final. Freezing cold. Not many others there.
Think it may have been 1993?

1993? Wasn't still running then was it?

The one against Centrals was in '94. For some reason this game comes up on here every year or so.

Was a Tuesday night in gale force winds. The crowd would have been five figures though I reckon.

Like the top 2 sides after 9 rounds or something?

Much like when the Government are in trouble, they'll resort to a discussion about making Aust a Republic or changing the Aust flag.

Shambolic.

From memory, some games counted towards the Foundation Cup and some didn't. They might also have had a game or two each before the minor round as part of it? Can't recall exactly and I don't think I have any budgets from that year.

They did have a couple of different formats those last several years I think.

Once again if you want to know what the AFL will look like in 5 years' time just watch the NBA now. Everything they do is an adaption of what USA sports has been doing for a period of time.

Yep remember my old man taking me. He was so bloody excited Centrals were in a 'Grand Final' at that we might win a trophy.

Due to the weather everyone got to sit in the members grandstand and at one point you couldn't see the other side of the oval so everyone just started chatting away until the ball was visible again.

Which is absolutely lunacy, because the NBA tv ratings are at historic lows. I really struggle to watch a regular NBA game, much rather watch the NBL. Their joke of an All-Star weekend is challenging the NFL for most redundant, at least the NFL can have the excuse that some of the best players aren't available due to the Super Bowl.
If there's one sport's lead I would be avoiding at all costs, it's the NBA. Which perfectly explains why DIll and his fools are headed down that path...

Memories of the good old Escort Cup in the early eighties. Matches at Thebby oval in the middle of the week. Sneaking through that hole in the fence to watch the South v Torrens blockbuster. It always seemed to be South who kept winning these matches.

Won't be long.

I think once they get to 20 teams it will be a top 8 and then a couple of wildcards to make a top 10 style format.

Prefer neither of the options but if you had to pick, would prefer the Wildcards over the in season tournament. At least allows footy to be played that week between R24 & finals. Suppose clubs are on board with the mid-season tournament with the $$$ offered

When there are 20 teams, it should split into two divisions. Teams play everyone twice, top 5 finals, two bottom teams from top division get relegated and two Grand Finalist from 2nd division go up. Extra excitement with promotion and relegation. Plus it gives teams like St Kilda and Essendon a chance to win a flag

Two divisions seems way out there for the AFL, but it's better than the wildcard and in-season comp

They’re isn’t enough quality talent for 18 teams … 20 teams would be lunacy.

Come on we all know the 20 team decision won't be based of talent.... purely be a tv rights business decision and the AFL knows blind loyalty will mean fans follow their team no matter what. If Collingwood are top they will get huge crowds/tv viewers no matter the standard.

Expanding the finals series to ten teams - because that's what a wildcard round system is - would be lunacy. Next they'll be handing out participation awards.

If you can't make the top 8 out of 18 teams, you have no business remaining in premiership contention after the H&A season. Even the top eight system is generous really.

That’s why the AFL have completely lost the plot. It’s all about $$$. Not for profit my arse.
