What system do you support? Free agency or zoning?

I think smithy was referring to the main draft, and personally i'm against any drafting system, although would concede a partial zoning/drafting system could be implemented.

Given a national comp I'm not sure if zoning would work anymore...

I reckon if a club can detect a talented youngster and he wants to work for them that's how it should be..and how is was to a certain degree...

\Do you reckon the Carlton talent scout has earnt his money when they pick Kruezer as number 1 pick? I dont think so...

If I worked for Holden and Ford offered me more money and someone told me I HAD to work for Toyota for a specific wage I wouldn't be happy..

If the draft is unfair and restrictive so is zoning and the salary cap.

There are possibly too many clubs in Melbourne for zoning to work. I couldn't imagine SA or WA agreeing to Melbourne clubs getting zones in their states. Mass relocation would be needed and the fights over the relativity of the zones would be huge with everyone claiming their allocated zone needed bolstering with special concessions.

It wouldnt be easy to implement zoning but i think the only real problem state is NSW. Queensland had i think 9 draftees either last year or the year before, i dont think theres a reason why they couldn't stand alone now. As for NSW/The Swans, i personally would be happy for them to have exclusive access to NSW, ACT, NT and Tasmania (or maybe Qld could have the NT). Theres too many Victorian teams in the competition thats obvious - so it would be a good excuse to get rid of a few so that an equitable zoning system could occur in Vic. The other alternative is for a combination of zoning and some type of draft - maybe each club could select 2 players from their zone, and the rest could go into a draft. There would need to be clearly set out criteria as to which player belonged to which zone, but given the immense imperfections with the current system, i cant see why it couldn't be done.

A total free market i think would just be too messy and cause too many complications.

Not having a salary cap would cause massive problems, it would be just like English soccer.

I think as long as the zones were clearly set out (eg in SA i think it would be easy with Port getting half of the 10 foundation SANFL clubs (as it stood in 1964) and the Crows getting the other half......... eg Port - PAMFC, CD, WWT and NA, and the Crows the rest). I think any "fights" over zones would be a lot more preferrable to the situation now with the way underperforming clubs are rewarded for their mediocrity, the stench of tanking is never too far away, and the yearly ritual where players try to use the trade system to get back to a club in their home state. Given that 90% of youngsters would probably want to play for a club in their home state, trade week would be nowhere near the drama it is currently.

Zoning won't work in this day and age GWW....

Salary cap is good in a way as mentioned so we don't go the same way as european soccer.

But you can't stop someone from working for an employer who values your work more or is willing to pay more than someone else...if it went to court the AFL would lose....

I was joking about that - suggesting it would suit the Crows and we deserve to have every advantage we can scrounge, just like I think Norwood should get first pick of all the SANFL players!

At work, we came up with a draft combined with a zoning system. The only difference is that the club responsible for that zone had exclusive rights to players there for the first three rounds and then it was open slather after that. For example, if the Crows had South Eastern SA, they could get guys from Mount Gambier, Millicent, etc in the first three rounds of the National Draft and then anyone could choose players from the region from the start of the fourth round.

It would mean that clubs had to develop resources in their region like what happened in the VFL in the 60s, 70s and 80s and would be of greater benefit for clubs at the grass roots level in terms of promotion and development.

Comps like the TAC Cup are a waste of time because they have no soul and it would be better having a VFL competition with Seniors, Reserves and Under 18 or Under 19 where there is a true club feeling and an obvious pathway instead of the muddle and uncertainty that is the TAC Cup.

A salary cap is a necessary evil, even though I admit that Carlton would immediately make great strides up the ladder in an open market.

Zoning systems promote shenanigans in moving gun kids around, etc and can end up being open slather recruiting

Zoning would only be a chance to work in the AFL if Victoria had a proporionate number of teams compared to their population (compared to SA/WA), say 4 teams. Until that happens ... which it won't ..... gotta have a draft IMO

Benchwarmer, how did you zone up the 10 Victorian-based teams?

Most major world sports apart from English Premier League (for one) have a draft system - otherwise like in EPL you just end up with the same few clubs winning all the time
In between signatures .....

We went with something reasonably similar to the old VFL zones, with Tassie and the NT as an open slather area.

Callum Urch is training with the Hawks during the pre-season. I know huge news in Adelaide.
Just wondering what any Roos supporters out there think of him. Hes only played a handful of games, is this injury or form?

Had a pretty bad run with injuries and is probably worth another chance IMO.

Also interesting to see Sampi is training with Melbourne, he is not looking much fiitter and also had a slight injury scare. I would be very surprised to see them picking him up, especially after the Byron Pickett incidents. Its a real shame Sampi is a big talent and hope he gets another chance.
