THE SANFL has rebounded from two Covid-riddled years to post a profit for
2022.
After fighting for its survival when the pandemic hit in 2020 and battling
through restrictions in 2021, the league, which lost $1.58m in that period,
has announced positive cash earnings of $1.02m for last year.
The result, announced at the SANFL annual general meeting on Tuesday
night and which comes after the league had budgeted for another loss, is
largely the result of one-off savings after the Adelaide Oval Stadium
Management Authority reduced the service fee charged to the SANFL to cover
stadium costs.
Cost management and an increase in Adelaide Oval crowds also helped the
league rebound from the pandemic.
Following employee stand-downs in the 2020 financial year, SANFL’s
workforce returned to near pre-Covid levels with competitions running as
normal in 2022.
Financial distributions to state league clubs rose by six per cent compared to
2021, with a focus on increasing resources for female football.
SA Football Commission chairman Rob Kerin said despite the positive
financial result, the league would need to remain “financially prudent when
managing its operations in an improving but still difficult economic
environment”.
“SANFL is budgeting for a cash surplus for 2023, but that will be heavily
dependent on more people walking through the gates of Adelaide Oval this
AFL season and for major events,’’ he said. “Significant increases in
operating costs at Adelaide Oval, due to global economic conditions, will also
weigh heavily on our ambitions for a surplus in 2023.
“Despite the headwinds in the broader economy, SANFL is well positioned to
continue investing strategically, implement new initiatives and grow the
game of football in South Australia.
