A bit of a pick of some brains here, I've had a plan in place for a few years to wait for my son to turn 18 then I was going to move to one of our Queensland plants.

But once again my name has been thrown around for a significant role, this time for role in a brand new plant in Victoria, I have until the 28th to apply.

Of course it's going to be a while I assume before I can physically work there (which would be a huge bonus for me), can anyone brief me what it's like to live away from family? I'm comfortable in my own company and don't need people around me to function as a person.

My marriage is already shagged and I have little interest in flogging a dead horse, the distance might even rejuvenate it and rid it of the debris that ruined it.

Yeah, I realise that, I know CM had done it and was hoping for some feedback on others that have.

I spoke to my kids about it last night, generally for the first 6 to 12 months work pays for you to fly home each fortnight for the weekend, my kids are getting older and they will benefit from the financial gains.

Unfortunately the only way to progress within my company is by relocating first, no one in good positions leave in Adelaide and all the upper management roles are taken by people of similar age to me so I'm seemingly stuck in the same role forever.

I've had to adapt in the past and I'm going through it right now, perhaps a wholesale change could do me a world of good.

Since I broke up with my first wife I became a bit of a loner, I get invited out most weekends but I don't really socialise much anymore yet I'll meet a random at a pub and we'd talk like we've been mates forever.

If I was in Boon's situation I too would think that I couldn't do it, the Covid shit does concern me, more of the not knowing how long restrictions are in place for etc. plus I think there will be another semi-lockdown nationwide to come.

There was a 6 month temporary relocation back to Adelaide in 2003-4 to sort out issues with my aging family here, but otherwise we lived in Melbourne until my wife died and I moved back to Adelaide in January 2009. Relocation to Melbourne was a bit stressful in the first year having to find my way around. After my wife's death I tossed up whether to sell the property in Olinda and move into a unit in Southbank or move back to Adelaide where I had family and old friends.

Since then, in my part time medical work, I have relocated for 2 or 3 months multiple times to places like Bunbury, Townsville, Perth, Northam, Lismore and Grafton.

Fortunately I rented in Malvern and worked in South Melbourne the first year and quickly learned to avoid Malvern and Toorak roads and travel in via Wattletree Rd and St Kilda Rd. Later I moved to Olinda and worked at Ferntree Gully. That made life easier.

Adelaide is pretty much the easiest city in terms of navigation in the world. I'm sure you'd get used to Melbourne quickly.

One thing you've probably already considered, LM, but I'll mention it anyway, is the huge cost of living in Melbourne versus Adelaide. You'd need a significant offer to outweigh that. Something to consider anyway.

Very true, you don't want to be working out West, and travelling all the way across town everyday.

The company I work for has its office & factory in Broadmeadows. It's an awful place, I'd never live there. We currently live about 20-25 minutes away (down the ring road) to the east, and acceptable commute by any standards. It's a nice enough area, but it's not Brighton or Kooyong, that's for sure. Property prices here are insane. So you have to live within your means. I'd like to move out a little further to Eltham or Diamond Creek, they have more of an Adelaide Hills feel about them....

The violence you've heard about is concentrated around the western suburbs, but it's essentially everywhere, even the leafy suburbs to be honest. If you don't go looking for trouble, it won't find you.

While the pubs are closed here for now, there are some bloody good ones (and bad ones for that matter) about. There are a 100 Reephams over here LM - take your pick!
