if Richmond beat the Saints next week and Carlton lose to Melbourne, Carlton will receive the first two draft picks

my question, is their incentive for Carlton to win?

is this good for footy, my view, the League should look at a lottery system such as the NBA

Carlton will still do shit with good draft picks or crap draft picks.
It doesn't matter, Carlton will always be shit. (at least for the next 10-15 years)

No of course it is not good for footy, and i agree entirely. The NBA system is the way to go.

On the last round, it is going to be huge with all spots up for grab except top!!

Port V WCE for 2nd

Hawks, Coll, Roos for 4th

then down to Freo to get into the 8.

Its not only that Carlton get the number 1 pick (and 2 top 3 picks), its also that other clubs who do the right thing with their administration and player development, go down the order by 1 for each pick.

I agree absolutely with SD, there is no incentive whatsoever for Carlton to win, and its a disgrace that Demetriou wont look at it the way the majority of football fans do.

That lottery is for the bottom four, I think Dutchy pointed out. It should be implemented, but for all the bottom 8 clubs.

That way, any team in the bottom half won't "tank", it's finals or no finals. No one would tank to miss the finals to be in with a shot of the no.1 draft pick, would they? :)

Demetriou has definitely got this one wrong

he is correct by saying that it is not in the spirit of the game, however why not remove the incentive, the perception that a side may tank is driven by the incentive to do so, by removing the incentive you remove the perception.

This can only be good for the game

The Saints are gone and justice is served. I never thought I'd support the West Coast Illeagles, but all those sneaky kidney, rib, and gut punches, I saw on TV made me realise why I had never felt good about the Saints. Brisbane are the only other team I have seen employ this as a standard and constant tactic.

I guess it confirms that what happened the previous week is team policy, and not one guy going crackerdog for the day.

I think tanking is the most stupid invented myth in footy. Firstly in such a cut throat buisness what coach is going to risk his 'job' for a priority pick. Secondly what does the coach say OK boys lets go out and loss this one! Even if he did players would have far more pride then that they'd pull the pin on a club if that be the issue. Personally i find it IMPOSSIBLE to play any competitive sport with a mind set to lose and so why would professionals? Once you cross the line its all buisness.

Wouldn't be writing the Saints off yet mate, they should account for Richmond comfortably and I'd rate the Crows as slight underdogs against Collingwood.

10-15 years..mmm don't think so. Maybe 5 at most. IMO once our squad gets to a average age of around 26 they'll be good. As for the Draft system...if that is the way the AFL run it then so be it...

Carlton may get to 12th in the next 10-15 years but none higher than that. Carlton dont want to risk losing good draft picks

Surely they will actually start to use the players from all of these early picks and become a better side at some stage? What would be the point of 15-20 years of medicrity just to get draft picks? Even the players they pick up this year will be retired by then!

For Port to finish 2nd, they have to basically match the margin of what West Coast might beat Essendon by. THe margin for error is about 2 points.

So if West Coast beat Essendon by 48 points....then depending on the total scores, Port will have to beat Freo by at least 46 points to get into 2nd spot and secure two home finals.

Gonna be a crazy day on Saturday. Given the result of the West Coast match will be known before the Power game starts...Port will know exactly what they have to do. Will Freo tank just to piss West Coast off?

i don't think Fremantle will do that, I think they would prefer to see West Coast finish 2nd. I also think they don't care about West Coast or Port and they will go out and try and win...........

Technically correct, of course, CP! But the tactics are still reprehensible. Carn Richmond!!
