Re: The South Australian Political Landscape
Thanks for sharing your experiences bulldogproud and hope you're able to stay away from them.
Although I've never cared for pokies I have an uncle with an addictive personality who used to be a gambling fiend (horses & dogs) and then became a pokie addict. The 'evil one armed bandits' he calls them. He's been to gambling help groups a number of times and has poured tens of thousands of dollars into them over the years. Every aspect of pokie machines is scientifically developed and honed to try and get people addicted.
Any party that proposed to go like WA and ban pokies from everywhere other than casinos would get my vote in a heartbeat.

Is that when they have to start using their own money?

Re: The South Australian Political Landscape
I think it's after they've launched their election campaigns they have to start using their own money for advertising etc which is why they usually leave the launches until about a week before the election.
Once caretaker mode hits I think it just means they can no longer make official announcements as the government.

Re: The South Australian Political Landscape
Thanks for sharing your story bulldogproud. Certainly educational for the rest of us and it sounds like you have kicked the habit which is great.
It seems to me you are describing the escapism aspect - you can sit in front of the machine and zone out from the outside world and your worries.
I have probably done that with online poker in the past, even though I was a winning player (thankfully) I still used it as an escape from real life.

Re: The South Australian Political Landscape
Thanks for that, Bennymacca, Gozu et al. Am glad you were a winner, Bennymacca, although I have a feeling you are happier also when you are not playing. At least with online poker, you do have some degree of skill involved. Yes, I would definitely agree with my addiction to pokies as being part of escapism.
I have at least identified I have a problem, which is the first stage of kicking the addiction. Sadly, I still do play them a fair bit, except pretty much only when I am overtired (the worst time though, as it is when I mindlessly feed the machine too much!). I have probably lost over $100,000 over the twenty years or so the pokies have been available in Adelaide. The sheer magnitude of this has kicked in and sometimes prevents me from playing when I otherwise would have.
Cheers

Anyone on here know if the Sarah Hanson-Young rumour is true or not? (Not repeating it on here).

Re: The South Australian Political Landscape
Received an email today from SA labor party, asking me to watch their ads about the election... fair enough, they got my email from something I signed up to so no real probs.
But; at the bottom of the email they have put the following:
"PS Every dollar we raise will mean more South Australians will see our message before they vote. Can you donate $7 to make sure our message is heard?"
No shit, I thought this might have been a spam but not the case... Maybe if you didn't waste all that money on the o-bahn tunnel you wouldn't need my $7.

Yes, it is true that Sarah has received a death threat from a follower of George Christensen:

She published the email so I have read. I am not fan of hers at all but that is a solid right wing nut job there.bulldogproud wrote:The Apostle wrote:Anyone on here know if the Sarah Hanson-Young rumour is true or not? (Not repeating it on here).
