Re: Abbott/Liberal Govt Watch
As a Rhode Scholar, Abbott really struggled to speak in an understandable manner.
Turnbull on the other hand is very well spoken and generally takes more consideration in what he says.
And I did enjoy the other week when Labor tried to push some negativity onto Turnbull about how rich he is and claiming he doesn't pay tax here due to Cayman Island investments etc and it was delivered like a Johnny Howard offy which Turnbull flicked up with his boot and smashed it out of the park.

Re: Abbott/Liberal Govt Watch
Libs withdraw funding for the "climate consensus" centre
More common sense from Turnbull. Have to say the Libs are rapidly looking like an option for me at the next election if they keep going at this rate.
If they don't dump the ppl scheme and get me NBN by q1 2016, and close the offshore detention centres (for at least women and children) then that will get me across the line.
In general I think free trade agreements are a good thing, I don't think artificially propping up industries purely for jobs is a good thing. Would rather we find industries where we can be world leaders at and that we can then export etc

Would like to see them abolish negative gearing and the superannuation tax concessions.

Paul Keating tried both those and had to back down later when the effects showed up...
I've never used negative gearing, but I was aware at the time that there was a rental property shortage that arose soon after it was restricted - at least in Adelaide. (My older sister was in real estate and I had always followed the industry closely, and had helped her out in the office at weekends since I was about 13.)
I know overall statistics influenced by the bigger cities were less dramatic.
I was about to launch a self-managed Super fund when his changes to that came in. So, I consulted two independent accounting firms who went over the figures and advised me not to proceed as there were better strategies I could adopt, under the new regime.*
*The system required you to declare a fairly high taxable income before you could contribute much to your Super fund and than your Super was taxed. Other means of turning potentially taxable income into non-taxable investments and capital gains made more sense and paid off better over time.

That's why reform has to be phased in over time - to limit the short-term disruption to rental supply.

It would be an interesting experiment. Although I've never been into negative gearing some investors would inevitably bail out of the market, and we don't really know what the long term effect would be as Paul lost his nerve. There has been talk at times of restricting negative gearing to new housing, but I'd not be interested in buying property out in the new fringe suburbs* - location is more important to investment than any concessions that may be offered.
*Nevertheless, I have bought a house in a good central location in Mt Barker than I may consider living in when I'm older and can no longer cope with my present rather steep hills location. That, of course, is not purely an investment so much as it is a safety net to avoid ever being forced to move into a city or inner suburban unit when I get old - I'm only 72 now!

Yet, its critics still say there was no effect on availability and cost of rentals
Makes me laugh and just shows how the truth is a commodity
There was no reasonable effect because they reversed it as the first signs showed the devastating effect it would have had
Back then, there were examples of landlords putting their rents up by around 50% to offset the loss
Suddenly, the welfare groups screamed and Keating blinked
dedja: Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

Hopefully Morrison has a better clue as Treasurer, than Hockey.

I note the chart on rents uses "rent increase minus the CPI increase for that capital city".
I'd be interested in a chart for pure rental charges as the Keating era seemed to be one of high CPI, and high interest rates.
(Interest rates: for a commercial property purchased in early to mid 1985 I was quoted 17% but got it down to 14% using pre-paid bank bills. The purchase was worth the risk because I planned to resell quickly - and did - I got out at a small profit in late 1987 just before property values dropped.)

I only briefly read a headline on the bottom of the screen that wasn't about Mal being here, but about him criticising Nick X for starting up a political party.....it seems the Libs are really scared of Nick here, especially Pyne

Pyne would be scared of plenty of things. Like missing out on a free lunch, or another private school tie, or a moth.

Pyne has ever reason to be concerned at the moment. SA is in the economic shit and with an unemployment rate expected to rise in the coming years hr has little to hang his hat on.
The line of "the previous Labor government" has run its course. And without that he is found wanting.

Re: Abbott/Liberal Govt Watch
How much of a disgrace is Tony Abbott, $80 million down the drain in a failed attempt to smear the Opposition Leader.
OPPOSITION Leader Bill Shorten says he is pleased to be cleared of any wrongdoing during his time as boss of the Victorian branch of the Australian Workers’ Union by the trade union Royal Commission, but questioned the timing of the release of the commission’s report.
“I’ve always said for the last 18 months that that Tony Abbott’s Royal Commission was in large part designed to smear his political opponents,” Mr Shorten told reporters in Perth. “I’m pleased (by) this decision late last night.

Mal Brough seemingly in continually deepening political sh!t over his apparent misleading of the Parliament over the Peter Slipper/James Ashby/speaker's diary affair.
Turnbull's first real test as PM. Will be interesting to see how long Brough can last, and whether Turnbull has the bottle to lance one of his own men.
