Agreed.

AFL rookie wage - $54,000. ( Add match payments for those who get elevated and play AFL level )

Eat breakfast at the club, lunch at the club, get clothed ( in the main with official club apparel ), full medical cover, if a first or second year player probably get housed with a host family or live with 2-3 other rookies all the while training at elite level and doing what you love for a living.

Go ahead, make me an 18 year old "slave".

when the AVERAGE wage for their profession is 6 times that of the rookie though, it does seem that it is out of whack a little bit.

You can't even contemplate Australian Footballers wages compared to overseas as the turnover those leagues generate is enormous compared.

A former employee of mine is best mates with e recently recruited Australian Footballer recruited in to European Football and as a teenager the first thing he did was go out and buy a Lambhorgini (as you do). However he can't even walk down to the local park for a kick without being surrounded by locals and media.
Can you bring a man to his feet when defeat is on repeat?

what if everyone else around you was earning between 6 and 20 times what you are earning for doing exactly the same job?

imo i think the rookie base wage should be more like 80-100k

Like most places of employment, pull your finger out and get to their level instead of sulking about not being paid the same amount.

1st year out of Uni V's established professional.

Everyone was paying to play in my team
WE ALL PLAYED FOR THE LOVE OF THE SPORT

At 18 I was a brickies laborer , and didnt like the job
What does an 18 year old get for being a laborer these days?
Do they make $54k a year?

I was on about $200 a week to be a laborer at 18
If I was getting the equivalent playing football at that age, I would not complain

BM QUESTION
You earn 6-20 times, less than others
I look at it as an apprenticeship
The rewards come when you master your trade , just like the real world in the work force

does anyone at your work earn 10 times what you do? there wouldn't be at mine.

from me to my 3 level up supervisor is probably a 100% jump in pay. not a 1000%

It's the top level that's out of whack. Can't compare to overseas sports because they generate more cash.

Can't compare player income:organising body ratios to overseas sports because the AFL is unique in that it is in charge of game development. The others are leagues responsible for themselves and no one else.

Is Gary Ablett producing more than 10 times the output then someone on the Gold Coast rookie list?
I'd say yes.
Rookie listed players are well enough looked after IMO, especially when the benefits Booney mentioned are added. These players are also assisted with setting up/conducting studies to equip them for life after football.

I think the entire organisation needs to rethink it's purpose.

Why is it that people actually know the name of the bloke who is in charge of fixturing? No wonder umpires think they're so important, compared to him they are!
