With it being 53 years since they last played each other in a Grand Final makes me wonder what other combinations we haven't seen for so many years.
South vs Central or Eagles (maybe Glenelg or even Sturt) has obviously never happened. But of sides that have played each other at least once in a Grand Final, which combination hasn't occurred for the longest time?
Possibly Port vs West? I think I read about them playing a Grand Final in front of a massive crowd in the 30's (a reminder of the rich history of the SANFL: Westies once had a following to be reckoned with). If that was the last time it'd be a 73 year gap at least.
Port played West in 1954, 1956, 1958, 1959 and 1962 with Port winning all 5 flags, 3 by less than a goal. Glenelg have never played South or West in a Grand Final. South haven't played Central. West have never played South.
If South have ever played Norwood in a Grand Final it would be a long, long time ago. South last played Sturt 73 years ago and North over 100 years ago. North haven't played Sturt for 81 years which is surprising given that they have been in the third and fourth most Grand Finals respectively.
The stat I always found amazing was that until the Eagles played Centrals in the 2000 Grand Final there had never been a Grand final which didn't have at least one of Port, Norwood, North or Sturt.
114 years!! 1899 South won.
Thank you LL and RIG.
Just having a think about how often sides line up against one another in a Grand Final, I realized that for every side to play each other once in a Grand Final, it would take 36 years in a nine team competition, and 45 years in a ten team comp. Norwood and North haven't faced off for 53 years, which exceeds those figures by only 8 years. However, they played each other pretty regularly leading up to that last clash. That makes this a pretty good vintage Grand Final IMO.
Was having a look at the history forum last night and found the "interstate invasion" thread. I think it's fairly relevant to this one. I might post a link,
EDIT hope that works
I'm gonna sit back, crack the top off a Pale Ale, and watch the Double Blues prevail
