A lot of ignorant people have popped up lately. If you want to call someone something but not sure what is ok; try calling them by their name.

How many times did Gary Lyon get called an ape in comparison to Adam Goodes? Something that might be amusing once or twice might wear thin after three decades.

The great Viv Richards summed it up best 'when you are black you never truly know what is in a man's heart'. Goodsey would feel the same when Eddie told all of Melbourne his promotional ideas a few days after being the 'voice of reason' on this issue on behalf of the Collingwood Football Club.

Jason Dunstall gets called an ape all the time, or the chief, or king of the jungle etc etc. It is because he looks a bit like an ape

Yeah but not because he's black. And there's the difference. And that's why it's a racist comment. Besides, Dunstall would have been called Piggy or Bunghole a lot more often than he would ape.

The AFL have mooted an "indigenous only" TAC cup club forming next season and are contemplating the All Stars being sent to Ireland, being indigenous only.

I'm sure they wouldnt consider either of these if there wasn't great benefit involved, but it just seems to me that the best way to put the lid on racism, is to stop highlighting the differences in people that are essentially all Aussies. By all means celebrate all various cultures at appropriate times.

Hope I've chosen my words well enough, appreciate the sensitivity of the topic.

The problem is that people who are amongst the comfortable majority are starting up the bogus concept of reverse discrimination. I've been shot down on Facebook by bringing up the fact that indigenous Australians have a much higher illiteracy, infant mortality, unemployment and inceration rate than their fellow Australians. Is not being able to play in a football game a small price to pay for these small gestures. I was even told 'what does that have to do with it REB'.

Plenty.

My point wasn't supposed to be anything about "reverse discrimination", more questioning whether the AFL are setting the right environment to best deal with racism. Completely agree that football is a fantastic pathway and opportunity for young indigenous people.

but, and this is only a question, did she call him that because of his skin colour, or because of his other physical attributes? (ie, big, broad shoulders, hairy, long arms)? i can understand how there can be some confusion when one person says something that can be interpreted multiple ways. i can also understand why adam was offended by the term.

are we at the point that any derogatory terms are no longer acceptable? is "ranga" ok? are short jokes?

having asked the above, i in no way consider myself a racist. i have never used the term at the heart of all this in reference to an indigenous australian, and wasnt aware that it has such negative connotations, however ill ensure i dont use it in future. to me, previously, calling someone an ape inferred they were big and dumb, and while that is still offensive, i hadnt considered it racist before now. i hadnt heard it specifically referenced to one particular race or another, just directed towards big people, like myself when someone wanted to insult them. as i said, i will in future be more aware of the racial connotations.

you live and learn i suppose. the good to come from this is the girl in question is young, so she has a chance to learn her lesson and move on in life. lets hope others learn from her example.

I feel as if many of us non-Aboriginals think we're missing out on something because we can't call people certain names.
"They can call me a ranga but how come I can't call him a black c*nt? That's no fair."

Not that, of course, I've ever seen a red headed person left to last for service, or spat on for their hair colour, or not employed, unable to vote, or to go right back to the crux of this argument had most of their race wiped out.
When redheads have had that experience, please bring that up in this debate.

Sure, if you wish to bring up the 'ranga' card, or the 'fat' card, stop using those terms to slight people yourself. Bet you don't, though.

i never tried to play any cards, i just asked the question. and then tried to explain my take on things. sorry for having a different opinion.

i dont feel like im missing out on anything, and id never call someone what you suggested, id use the c word, but without any colour attached (and only if it was deserved;))

the only reason i asked, is that i can more understand if she made the racist comment through ignorance, i wasnt aware until now of the specific racial undertone to that name, and ignorance can be helped through education. it being unintentional doesnt make it any bertter, but she can use it to improve herself, and ensure it doesnt happen again. i try to be very careful myself not to offend anyone accidentally. if i offend someone i want it to be very deliberate ;)

however i dont understand deliberate racism at all. to me if you are a good person, you are no matter what your background is. similarly, if you are a c*** you are no matter what your background is....

There is only one colour that people should be judged with.
That is the colour of their blood..
To my knowledge it is red and we all are the same.
The sooner everyone realises that, a better place it will be...

Is Eddie's comment racist or is he just making light of an incident that happened a few days earlier? I think the latter.

Were the girls comments racist? If she doesn't mean for them to have any racial meaning but they cause offence to Goodes is it racist? Is she negligent or reckless in tribunal parlance? Is she too young to know better?

I think discriminating against people based on race is poor form, but this outcry at the moment is a bit over the top. Is all the humiliation suffered by the girl and Eddie proportionate to the crime? I don't think it is.

The idea that racism only exists in the morally corrupt reinforces the casual attitude to racism - discretion evades the speaker, as it so clearly did with Ed.

Racism exists beyond invective. In fact, it is cloaked in painting the racist as the victim and the target as inflexible.

Let's have a poll to see if anyone understood that!

Surely it was cut and pasted from a university lecture piece? This is a footy forum not a Harvard study case!

I asked Dale if it was still alright to call him a silverback. He said yes because he does have silver hair on his back. Go figure.
