The minimum wage is $15.51 for a permanent worker who no doubt has much more security than a rookie listed AFL footballer.
He gets $35k which equates to 43 hours per week at $15.51. Are you seriously trying to defend this as a reasonable wage for a rookie?
So yeah the guy working at the local servo is certainly better off on that basis.
No one denies the footballer has much greater opportnities but they are being exploited by the AFL for mine.

How much does an SANFL reserves player earn?

This bloke is a mature aged Rookie though, so obviously he has done the hard yards a purchased a house, then got Rookie listed and had to take a pay cut. Being rookie listed is obviously a great opportunity but he had to take a massive pay cut to do so. Mortgages and families don't get paid on $35k.
But yes, for a 17/18 year old they could survive.

It is his choice.
He has to do it tough for one year, in the hope it pays off in the future, much like many people who choose to go back to study that would be placed in a similar predicament.
Not everyone gets to chase their dream because of other circumstances in their lives. He has chosen footy despite the other factors in his life.

Think you should check the TV ratings for the next Olympics games if you think swimming isn't popular.

If they showed an AFL game once every 4 years too I'd say it would be pretty popular
