This bloke is a mature aged Rookie though, so obviously he has done the hard yards a purchased a house, then got Rookie listed and had to take a pay cut. Being rookie listed is obviously a great opportunity but he had to take a massive pay cut to do so. Mortgages and families don't get paid on $35k.

But yes, for a 17/18 year old they could survive.

Moot point. Your opinion on the sport has little to do with the comparative pay rates of these professional athletes who, as opposed to the AFL rookie listed VFL footballer, perform on the world stage.

Couldn't be further from the mark mate.

FWIW, 17/18 year old on $35k working full time in a "normal" job would be adequate. A 17/18 year old on $35k who only trains for 3-4 hours a day and has the remainder to go and "spend", plus needing to consider all meals, activities he enters into because he is an AFL footballer bites the big one.

The minimum wage is $15.51 for a permanent worker who no doubt has much more security than a rookie listed AFL footballer.

He gets $35k which equates to 43 hours per week at $15.51. Are you seriously trying to defend this as a reasonable wage for a rookie?

So yeah the guy working at the local servo is certainly better off on that basis.

No one denies the footballer has much greater opportnities but they are being exploited by the AFL for mine.

I think Ian Callinan is in the same position, earning less this year than he did last year with his full-time airconiditioning job plus earnings from Centrals.

Absolutely - I took a $15k pay cut to have a crack at a dream job. No one forced any rookie to sign a contract, they're having a crack and good luck to them - but don't expect more than a minimum wage when you start out.

Well Pederson isn't a rookie anymore according to the NMFC site. He has also played 10 games this year. So I don't think he is on struggle street anymore.

There is no way i could have lived on 35k if i lived out of home (as 90% of the would) had to buy a car (moving interstate) etc etc

i know recruits get full compensation for any costs of having to move interstate. Also, i know that some clubs actually own houses and rent them to players for cheaper than normal.

Given the AFL have just signed a $1.2 Billion TV rights deal they should make the minimum wage a good $50K a year.

In the NBL it's about $20K for a development player and around $30K for a player on the roster proper.

The NBL's TV rights deal with Ten was for just $3 million.

The fact Demetriou gets paid more in one week than a guy on the rookie list gets in a whole year is galling.

I guess you can look at it another way to, with the changes to the rookie listed players not have to be so young this has given the chance to that older guy who maybe always had the talent but not the drive at a younger age, a second chance. With that would come some element of risk. There are heaps of people that decide to go to Uni at a mature age and are either supported by a partner or having to work after hours jobs to get by. If they are good enough they will make it. I agree if when I was 17-20 and was earning $35K minimum to do something that I would have been doing anyway for free I would be more than happy. It is the mature age rookies that would find it tougher.

Think you should check the TV ratings for the next Olympics games if you think swimming isn't popular.

If they showed an AFL game once every 4 years too I'd say it would be pretty popular
