roger luders'....who dunnit ?

Anything to do with the history of the SANFL

I think that it was 10 points. It was a very close game and North hit the front half way through the last quarter. Even in the Grand Final North led by 5 goals half way through the second quarter. Glenelg had started dreadfully, but then Stephen Kernahan just changed the game and the Bays led by 2 goals at half time. They were never going to lose from then and won by the best part of ten goals.

I still actually think that Bays 1985 side is the best SANFL side I have ever seen, 18 out of the 20 players either played VFL/AFL or Interstate football

Yeah they had some fair cattle running around then .. Many of those 18 not only played VFL/AFL, but were stars of differing degree in those comps.

This is off-topic and will probably open a can of worms.
From time to time on this site we get the "Centrals premierships aren't worth what they used to be" argument because of the AFL influence. Based on those player losses from the Glenelg GF sides, the same argument could be made that Port's premierships of 88-90 weren't worth "as much" as those preceding it because a fair percentage of these Bays players (not all, eg McDermott, Marshall) had gone to the VFL by the end of 87 or 88.
Similarly you could say these Bays premierships weren't "worth as much" when considering the players Port lost that had already won premierships and would have had such an influence in the mid-80's eg Phillips, Abernethy, Hughes, M Williams, Bradley (although here was playing here till 1985), maybe others?

Excellent point but to the 1985 Glenelg side you could add Hodgeman and Weston.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Laurie Argent played a blinder for the Bays in the last quarter of the 2nd Semi Final. ;)

I couldn't agree more. It was the most disgraceful umpiring I have ever seen in a final. He seemed to have a real hatred of North. I prefer umpires who are low profile. Laurie Argent always seemed as though he wanted to be the centre of attention.

I thought that we were certainies in 1987 as soon as I saw Thorpe and Kinnear as the umpires.

F***, maybe the maggot felt guilty after shooting "Bambi" in the 1984 QF the year before (IIRC it was Argent who reported Supe) and lets not forget how he gifted Antrobus the '83 Magarey Medal....

Yeah he loved us....

Yes am I am sure when Kernahan got reported Argent knew that the Ant would be next cab off the rank!

The Carey report for attempting to strike and getting 2 games probably goes down as one of the worst reports let alone worst penalties based on the act of all time.

Not even close - in 1968 Peter Darley (South) tied for the Magarey Medal with Barrie Robran and would have won it on a count back, but was ineligible because he had received a one match suspension for telling an umpire what we all knew about him in any case. That is harsh.

He wouldn't have won on a countback, it would have been an unbreakable tie. They polled an identical number of first, second and third preferences.

Carey seemed to get games for a teammates misdemeanours that were somehow missed by the umpire.

Yeah I know that OTR, just making the point that Argent was no "friend" of the Bays.

Anecdotally from that Magarey Medal night when it became apparent half way through that Kernahan was going to end up being the leading vote getter, our then General Manager ;) kept muttering between clenched teeth, "F***ing Argent, that F***ing Argent". At the end of night Argent came over to the Bays table to commiserate Stephen and said something along the lines of "Sorry, we are both going to have to live with this". Whilst he was saying it Harry had to be restrained by others on the table according to people I have spoken to about that night. To say he wasn't happy is a slight understatement.

Arguably the funniest bit of the whole episode was that Harry used to call himself "Perry Mason" given his record in being able to get other Glenelg players off at the tribunal, When Stephen was found guilty he has allegedly said, "Great, you can get everyone else off but you can't get your own son off..." Little did they know back then the consequences of the finding..

Agreed. I was pretty young when this happened, but remember it as clear as yesterday. An awful decision then and an awful decision now.

I used to look forward to Magarey night almost as much as Christmas night at that age. When it became apparent quite early on in 1983 that Kernahan was going to top the votes while unable to win, it was a really odd count for me. He was one of the most influential players I had seen at close range to that point in footy and remembered thinking even then, just how unfair it was that he wouldn't win a Medal :?

Bears out everything we've ever said about that incident.

Disgraceful and no excuses.

Yes, the viscious headbutt on poor Riley's elbow was totally unnessecary.

I was at that game and still remember the incident well. It really was disgraceful and I'm sure Stephen Riley wouldn't be proud of it.

I was only young but I remember Luders as a high flying clean player who got people through the gates and it was a shame to have a player like that wiped out. What was the final wash up, did Riley get any penalty?

Anyone got stats on how Luders did upon his return and how many games Stephen Riley went on to play?
Doesn't really seem fair that Riley went on to collect 2 premierships and Luders never being the player he was again.
