The future of Thebarton Oval as an SANFL venue.

Postby Sojourner » Thu Apr 08, 2010 2:17 pm

This weeks game of the Eagles vs Norwood has been pulled from Thebby due to the light towers not having been completed to the correct standard required for SANFL football. Does anyone actually know if the lights project at Thebarton is still actually to go ahead? Are the Eagles going to replace the game originally scheduled at Thebarton with another match later on in the season?

From what I have been told No, the Eagles will not play at Thebarton this year unless the SAAFL can get the light project back up and running.

You would have to ask the SAAFL and the West Torrens Council.

I'll say this but cant guarantee it is all correct

The SAAFL requested a (IIRC $100,000) grant from the AFL for lights to support grassroots football

The AFL knocked them back

There's no school there anymore for their supporters to sneak through, so no they wouldn't fill it ;)
It's all the SANFL's fault.

According to the Messenger Report at the time the breakdown was the State Governement Grant not being approved.

As issue apprarently was that other applications were for multiple sport complex BUT Thebarton was just Aussie Rules.

The fact it was covering a facility for 75 clubs and with it thousands of players was not considered favourably.

LMAO - what was the criteria for the Adelaide Oval upgrade @ $450m for 2 footy clubs and 1 cricket club, in the alternative to a new multi-purpose city stadium?

The Thebarton Oval application was under Dept Sport & Rec's Active Club Grant Program, Adelaide Oval was a one off major project promise

LMAO again Phil (ie at the Govt, that is) - Adelaide Oval was more like "off the cuff" than it was a "one off".

Just considering football club politics, with the move to not have any more games at Thebarton, is it not the reason that they have a match there each season to show respect for the heritage of the West Torrens Football Club after choosing Woodville as the home oval?

Agreed there mate. I would have been happy to have the game re-scheduled for Sat arvo and still at thebby but the thought process was if they can get the lighting upgrade done before end of season was that they would look at re-scheduling what was supposed to be a Woody game to thebarton under lights. What I consider ludicrous is that the council would put the time and effort into Richmond before Thebby.

I will be extremely disappointed if the Eagles don't play at least one game - day or night - at Thebarton this season.

You guys need to get over Thebarton, it was clearly not up to SANFL standard last year.

If thebby wasn't up to SANFL standard last year, we wouldn't have played there against South. The League thought that it was up to standard and South signed off that ground was of a high enough standard to play.
And when are the trees at Nourlunga grow to their full size.
