it is a slow process

its all about moderation

you need patience

the Doc has told both me and my gf a goos starting point is 30 mins walk 3 times a week - currently we average around 5

also mentioned to cut down on the evening dinner meal - which I dont have too as that is my brekky

it seems everyone here has the right idea about how to go about it

I wish everyone the best of luck in their life changing experience

I definitely want to teach my son good eating habits because his father is a shocker. He's a truck driver and eats nothing but fast food. Won't eat any vegetables except corn and potatoes because he reckons anything else makes him chuck. He's got terrible digestion problems and when he's not in the truck he's on the toilet. Fortunately he only sees my son one month out of the year, which isn't long enough to drill into him the idea that green vegies are yuck (and yep, that's what he tells my son, he also tells him that smoking isn't dangerous, good on ya dickhead). My son isn't overly keen on most green things but he loves his peas and beans, so it's a good start. :) He also thinks that smoking is dreadful because of that TV ad with the crying kid.

Yes. :) Spaghetti bolognese is another one - only time my kid will ever eat celery. At all other times he insists it's gross and he'll never eat it, but he doesn't notice it mixed in with the pasta sauce.

When they are under 2 the mixing works. when they are 5ish it's good to get them to help prepare and cook the food, this way they are more likely to eat something they played a part in getting to the table.

:D I used to do it with my ex - he who swears that vegies make him vomit, owing to a supposed allergic reaction. He never noticed that there were carrots in the pasta, and he certainly didn't vomit either. One time he did notice his mum doing the same thing, though - talk about World War III. He was going on about 'betrayal of trust' and slamming his hand into the side of the fridge.

When I was in high school I had a boyfriend who reckoned he hated pumpkin. But he wasn't very bright and couldn't tell the difference between pumpkin and carrot, so he ended up eating pumpkin quite a lot anyway!

It's mostly common sense...these days there's no excuse for not knowing what food is bad for you.

I'd advise you not to try and be a martyr...don't suddenly give up everything that's bad cos you're much more likely to give up. Try to swap your eating habits around so the bad stuff becomes the very occasional guilt free treat and the good stuff becomes the norm. OK you might lose weight a bit more slowly but your more likely to stick with it permenantly.

Another biggy is portion control...get smaller dinner plates for everyday use...it really does work...the plate looks full with less on it but your brain thinks your still getting a lot more food.

On the subject of the tinned tuna I think it's great...the one in oil is higher in calories than the brine but if you don't like the taste of the one in brine you can do what I do and get tuna in springwater...it's only a few pennies/cents more.

Good post JAS. It's about making changes that become embedded in your everyday habits rather than completely swinging from one side to the other.
And simple things can make a difference, such if you need a sweet treat have a finger bun without butter rather than a donut, cake or cream bun.
Interesting that many people are only on the water. I tried doing this about 3 1/2 years ago, and really felt the benefits. Probably have a soft drink once a week.

I also believe healthy eating helps regulate the body's temperature, making it easier to withstand colder and warmer temperatures (saving energy and associated costs!!)

Strewth, don't say that too loud or Garrett and Rudd will turn you into a Government Stimulus* Package*, implement it poorly, monitor terribly, allow imports in and then eventually **** you over.

Something else you might try to make time for is reading the labels on food. When something says it's 'low fat' or 'low calorie' it's worth comparing it with the full fat version because sometimes there is very little difference in fat content and a big increase in sugar content.

If you're in a house with others obviously getting them to join you in eating healthily would be good for them too but if they won't then try and get them to give you some support. Maybe a compromise where they can still have junk/fast food but just in the house or not infront of you so you can avoid some temptation. Perhaps give yourself a once a month treat day when you can all have a take away together or something.

Pack of sooks, get the bloodtest to a diabetes reading of 16, cholesterol reading triple the norm & blood pressure off the map then all you can eat is dirt & paper. Weight falls of.
Hey soccer you owe us 45million.

Or perhaps Labor would have to support the farmers at the expense of the working man that produces all the "factory" foods we eat these days.
