See, I don;t think he does. Sure he scores a lot of goals, but he's a poacher. A player who gets in the right position some of the time and gets goals because of it.
He doesn't score through class or graft, just from the hard work of others. And sure, it's a good skill to have, being in the right place at the right time, and he plays his role in the team well. But to suggest he's the best player in the league is a bit outrageous.
IMO - Ifill is a better striker.
Having said that, the Reds could do with Smeltz back on the books at the minute.
