I have been as critical as anyone about his form and his seemingly guaranteed spot in the side regardless.
But the main factor here IMO (and the main reason he is holding is spot) is who's next in line? There's not an obvious replacement that I am aware of since Ferguson's injury unless they punt with some young bloke.
One option is to punt on someone new and drop Hussey, if nothing else but to show him and his team-mates there's actually some pressure on his spot. Some time in Shield cricket might allow a recharge and a return for the Ashes. But, on the other hand, you want your best 11 out there and if he's still in our best 11 well so be it.
His last 3 tests have been an improvement statistically speaking. There's not the fluency of old but at least some runs are coming.

If Hussey goe's I think they will go to Hughes even after his poor start this season. If they continue to open Watson then G.Bailey should come in, he is ready for test cricket.
