Hussey Should Retire

Postby The Cadet » Thu Dec 10, 2009 7:14 am

Mike Hussey should retire at the end of the next Test and leave the game on his own accord in front of his home ground. At age 34 and after a below standard last twelve months the time is right for the champion batsmen.

If he prolongs his career he won't be remembered as a champion batsman. I reckon Punter hasn't got as long left as he thinks either. It's never a good look when experienced players start to lose their powers of concentration

Hayden
Jones
Martyn

anyone?

He won't want to retire based on what I have read (wants to play the Ashes).

I have been as critical as anyone about his form and his seemingly guaranteed spot in the side regardless.

But the main factor here IMO (and the main reason he is holding is spot) is who's next in line? There's not an obvious replacement that I am aware of since Ferguson's injury unless they punt with some young bloke.

One option is to punt on someone new and drop Hussey, if nothing else but to show him and his team-mates there's actually some pressure on his spot. Some time in Shield cricket might allow a recharge and a return for the Ashes. But, on the other hand, you want your best 11 out there and if he's still in our best 11 well so be it.

His last 3 tests have been an improvement statistically speaking. There's not the fluency of old but at least some runs are coming.

Although he has had a good career I don't think any lap of honours or a testimonial farewell match is deserved, he is not in the "legendary" status, he has only played 44 tests. I don't think he should retire, if the selectors feel as though he has lost the touch, they should drop him.
Punter, Pup, Steve Waugh all got dropped after form slumps relatively early in their careers and probably 100 others, Huss has never been dropped, he's a had a good run.

Pick Rogers and put Watto in the middle order. Put him in Hussey's spot. I can't watch Hussey bat anymore. I actually cheer when he gets out and I can't say that about any other batsman that has played for Australia EVER. People have a crack at the Kat but Hussey was 'striking' at about 27 the other day. The test died in the arse right there.

REB if it were me I'd do exactly that TBH. I'd go with Jacques. I was just trying to give a balanced view of it.

I've been hot on this for some time on here because I can't think of another player that's been let go so long in a form slump. I think it sends all the wrong messages to Hussey, his team-mates and the guys like Jacques & Rogers who are scoring runs at Shield level. No one player should have a spot in the Australian side locked down like that.

The other thing about this that frustrates me is the media's treatment of Hussey's slump v how they treated Hayden's (his slump was shorter and not as bad). It's like they pick the popular player and the unpopular one (with the fans) and run with what they think we want to hear. Hussey's form slump barely gets a mention whereas they were all over Hayden.

Rogers should come into the team and Watson to slip down to 4 or 5. Thats what should happen but I feel that Rogers is one of those blokes they turn a blind eye on. If Hussey goe's I think they will go to Hughes even after his poor start this season. If they continue to open Watson then G.Bailey should come in, he is ready for test cricket.

For mine, if Hussey is to be dropped (which i would not care if he does) there is two ways the selectors could go.

1. Bring in an opener (hughes, jacques or rogers) and drop watson down the order.

or

2. A straight swap with the next best batsman in SS at present. IMO that is G.Bailey. He has had a really good season this year, his first as captain, and he has made runs when his side needs it. He has been batting 4 for the two headers, and could be a straight swap for hussey.

for mine, hussey should retire at the end of this test series! and if he doesnt, drop him!

yes but a long way behind Bailey IMO at present.

Actually, now i think about it, Bailey would be a long way behind Khawaja since he isnt from New REB Wales

The next best batsman playing SS cricket for a straight swap = Brad Hodge

I hope we beat the WI 3rd test
If Huss made a ton I would be very happy

With the retirements of the big 3 Gilly/Warney/ooh ahh + some other good uns at the time like Dizzy, it was guys like Huss who performed brilliantly
Australian cricket is indebted to guys like Huss
For this reason, if we carry him overly sobiet

Klinger at 4? For a change to happen Hussey has to have a couple of failures in a row. I still think he will crack a ton either in Perth or the MCG.
