Anyway, each to his own. I'm an open atheist and evolutionist. That's my business.
Whatever you choose is your business.
I promise I won't try to change your beliefs and if you do the same for me, all is sweet.
OK, done deal ... thread can now be closed.

We could go on like this forever, well, not forever, but you know.
The basis of my non-belief is there is too much pain/sorrow in this world and if there is anyone taking care of us he/she is doing a crap job.

i'm right there with you boondogg.
my dad died when i was 4, my sister barely 2. that left my mother to raise 8 (although a year later my older sister also died, leaving her with 7) children to raise on her own. at times barely managing, and sometimes having to send 2 or 3 of us at a time to an aunty or uncles place for weeks at a time, because she simply could not afford to raise us all.
i know my story is barely a drop in the ocean compared to the rest of the world, but if there is a higher power, how would this happen?
and if all your going to say is that "the higher power does not control this, but we do with our decisions", then why the f**k should we believe in something that aint gunna do a single thing to help us out or save us from the pain and turmoil life brings?
each to their own, believe what you wanna believe.
but everytime those door-knocking twits come to try convert me, i promptly tell them the above story and shut the door in their face. i'm all for people believing in what they want, just dont try force it upon everybody else.
same as gay people, if ya wanna be gay, good on ya, just dont try kiss me.
rant over.

As they moved into their pitch I picked up their theme and gave them a quick tutorial on the roots of monotheism in Zoroastrianism, and how the Epic of Gilgamesh paralleled the story of Noah but was written many years earlier. They looked bewildered as they walked away...

She was beaten by her husband for 20 years who violently opposed these beliefs before one of her sons was big enough to beat the s***t out of him.
Never once did she question her God or wonder why he had forsaken her.
If anything, she talks about it being a comfort to her, to think that one day it will end.

The Jay-Dubs believe that only 144000 souls will join the big fella on judgement day. I suspect that over the course of history there have been considerably more than 144000 JWs. There is therefore a very large probability that your nanna is going to be forsaken by her God again.
Seiously, the JWs is a religion which doesn't have much going for it. The satanists might have as slim a chance of going to heaven, but at least they get to party with sabbatical goats and babylonian whores once in a while...
