I'm not sure it is more important, but more people care about Port, their relationship with the SANFL, and natural justice, one way or the other, than they do about the other issues..

The SANFL have made a lot of bad decisions over the years but I believe they are smart enough to realise their competition is screwed without the Magpies in it - even if they are punching bags for the next decade or so (which would be nice).
Does this footy club deserve the SANFL's help after 1990? No.
But the SANFL needs Port and needs to help the Magpies, who are in a unique situation, find a sustainable business model.
The Power can't run its own business so I fail to see how merging with the Magpies and in effect have the Power run a second business is the answer.
Could well wipe them both off the map!
Bloody Port.

We need Port in the comp because winning a flag is great but knocking off Port to win one is just that bit sweeter.

- Im sure Doggies fans would love to have given it to Port in their 8 flags [even just once]

Think you've answered your own query their Centurion. If they are getting paid by the Power they will play where they have to in order to maintain the inflated AFL wage. Just another business transaction....mightn't like it, but they would!!

There would be a lot of strange injuries to players if they were dropped from the AFL...they simply wouldn't want to play against their own club. There has to be a better way. Footy is a business these days & if a company is in strife financially, other companies don't come along & continually prop it up, unfortunately the company must go into receivership, cruel maybe but probably the only option :(

Under the model being considered no recruits from SANFL clubs would have to move, only interstaters (mostly juniors) would join the Magpies. And anyone who thinks Port Adelaide is going to dominate the competition under that scenario is seriously misguided.

This is what I was going to suggest after reading Centurian's post. Not being privy to the same media service you get over there I don't know the details of the proposed model, but something along the lines of the above should work.
Don't let the Maggies die. It would be the biggest single blow anyone could land on the SANFL's health. It would be much better to experiment with a number of solutions before pulling the plug.
Folding is pretty irreversible I think. Contract restructuring, conditions of participation of whatever they call it would be a little easier to amend in my unlearned opinion.

Anyone would think Port have won a majority of the wooden spoons over the decade! Toughen up, show that famous "Port Character" that we're always told about and work through it.
It's 12 years since Port Power entered the AFL.

I have the utmost respect for the Magpies they have been a fantastic club in our great competition. You don't win 30 + premierships without being a strong club. I think the major issue here is the Power - it was a dead set mistake allowing them to take the 2nd SA license in the AFL. Port Adelaide should only blame themselves for what they have become.

Correct - they should have had the first one !!!!!

At least Port got off their collective arses and did something. If they hadn't, the SANFL still wouldn't have a side in the AFL.

Just love these insightful critiques. "Port Adelaide shouldn't have got the 2nd license. I have ABSOLUTELY no idea who it should have been given to, but not Port Adelaide, because no matter what the circumstances any other club would have done it better." WHAT UTTER CRAP!! :butthead:

So:

1. Port shouldn't have got the second license because it has empirically underperformed.
2. No other club, amalgamation of clubs or new clubs would have performed better than Port.

from which we can conclude that

3. Any entity which received the second license would have underperformed.

and by extension:

4. There should have been no second license issued.
