TOOOOOOOOOOOOO much cricket ???????????????????????

Postby mal » Sun Nov 08, 2009 9:27 pm

There has been much discussion amongst the lads on whether our International cricketers play too much cricket
Here are the stats this decade
Please note some of the Test matches in this era may have been days shorter on completion
But its a guide to what could be expected when the itinerys are made up

YEAR.....TESTS......ODIS.....20/20.......MAXIMUM DAYS IF PLAYED
2000......08...........23.........0............63
2001.....14............21.........0............91
2002.....11............29.........0............84
2003.....12............35.........0............95
2004.....14............26.........0............96
2005.....15............29.........2............105
2006.....10............29.........2............80
2007.....04............34.........9............58.5
2008.....14............18.........2............89
2009.....13............41.........9............109.5

20/20 games have been included as half a day games

There is a correlation between the recent spate of injuries compared to injuries of past seasons
That is the 41 ODIs and also the 9 20/20 games played so far in 2009
AU has been scheduled a staggering 109 maximum days of cricket
And we still have 4 tests scheduled in 2009, and a maximum possibilty of 20 days of cricket
That would equate to an aMAYZing 129.5 maximum days

The almost non stop immediate backing up of games this year has exposed the fragility of some of the players fitness and injury levels
Some will say that some players have had unlucky finger injuries etc
How some players are not selected in all forms of the game
Quite rightly so
However my thoughts are the more you play, and backing up in a short span of time= increased probabilty of fatigue and injuries
It happens with some horse, some greyhounds, so why should it not apply to some humans

Perhaps the reason AU have just beaten IN in a ODI series in the haven of hell is that we had to select a fresher batch of cricketers

We have a squad of 30 CA contracts don't we, we also pick players that aren't even on this list, I'm pretty sure the Ashes tours from the 90's had a lot more tour matches than today aswell, I don't think we can use it as an excuse for the injuries, poor player management possibly, elite soccer players would have to endure far more.

Players can't complain about being away from home so much and suffering injuries when they take up playing in the IPL or other 20/Twenty comps.

I agree with LM in that you'd have to factor in to past stats what the players were doing when they weren't playing the internationals for Australia. Were they doing nothing or were they filling the gaps with other forms of cricket (State, county, tour matches etc)?

For a full time cricketer to play 109 days in a whole year (max) still doesn't seem OTT, even though it's > than the international cricket in 2000.

The analysis would also need to factor in the rotation policy of recent times and that most players don't play in all 3 forms of the game.

At face value there seems to be a correlation between injuries and the schedule but it needs a deeper look at the individual players who got injured and their specific playing loads and injuries.

was watching inside cricket the other night and blewett and mark waugh both said they played about the same amount of cricket back in 1999. brett lee said when he isnt playing he is training so even on non-playing days the players are still working so the too much cricket arguement is absolute rubbish

when was the last time any of the starst played a few domestic games in a season, or when did any of them last play grade cricket. years ago when tehre wasnt as much international cricket teh test players would play domestic and grade cricket during the season

Shane Watson and Mitchell Johnson will miss the last ODI in India and fly home to Australia
Why ?

Brett Lee says on TV he has slept in his own bed twice since April
Why ?

129.5 days of cricket scheduled for this year [20/20 games counted as half days]
That equates to playing 1 days play every 3 days

At that rate how can we expect our elite players to play all 3 forms of cricket at maximum capacity

Add to that the amount of travel

In one of the ODIs in India after a day night game
The players got back to the motel at 2-00 in the morning
They were up at about 6.00 to catch a bus for a 3 hour drive
Your kidding me !

Why ?Because they want a stop-over at Malaysia so they can hold hands and go shopping together.

Brett Lee says on TV he has slept in his own bed twice since April
Why ?Because his missus booted him out of it in March

I agree mal - there's been so much cricket since the Ashes it feels like we have been desensitised to that loss which in both the manner and that it was the Poms, should really hurt for both players and fans, but it doesn't feel like it.
