I'm still happy with the phone I bought in Taiwan outright 4 years ago, and my prepaid iSIM that is costing me about $5 a month on average.
The phone has a camera, and Internet connectivity, but I've never used either. In fact I only turn the thing on when I want to make a call, or when I need someone to be able to ring me back, which is not common.

your kidding?
Imo, owning a mobile phone, & leaving it turned off, save for when you wish to make a call is rude.
It's saying "I'll ring you when I like, but you can't ring me"
If people don't want to be called, don't have a phone!
I only turn my phone off when required by law.
I do put it on silent at times where a ringing phone would be considered rude &/or disruptive.

Where I live in the mountains the reception is patchy so you can't rely on it anyway, so local friends don't expect instant contact to be possible - that is a very much a city thing.
I only ever bought a mobile phone to save running about looking for a phone booth when I did need to make a call, and there is no social rule that says you must be available to take calls all the time.
That's a nice little earner the Telcos promote along with the idea current with kids that you must answer every SMS, and should ring all your friends every day.
My friends know they can leave a message on my Telstra Home 101 free service, or send me an email, and I can answer at my earliest opportunity, and they can do likewise with my messages.
Also, you can plan further ahead to meet friends - I already know where I am spending Christmas Day, and whom I am having lunch with on the 6th.
And none of us would cancel out at the last minute just because mobile phones make it possible.

Yes, I see it as resistance to the commercialisation/conning of the market by service retailers though! ;)
I also don't have a Plasma or LCD TV - I don't watch enough to justify it - though I will probably buy one when the existing 53cm flat screen CRT set dies.

*bump*

I'm now looking at getting an IPhone 3GS with 32gb of internal memory now that they've fixed up all the issues I had with it previously. Was also considering the N97 as I like having a full button keypad which I have presently on my Palm Treo but I can dock the IPhone in my new home theatre which is appealing.

Anyone got either of these phones (or similar) and have good or bad experiences with them? Also looking at using it as a mobile modem like I currently use my Palm via Bluetooth and want to make sure I can do this with my new phone. Also interested in experiences with battery life and reception as I live in a poor reception area.

Thanks in advance.

I have a Nokia E51, its a fantastic phone does everything I want BUT a mate just got an i-phone I must say I was converted it is a very impressive piece of equipment, however to get it at a reasonable deal he has to be on "3" which has vitually no 3G coverage outside the metro area. If I never travelled I would get the I-phone on 3. I've always been a Apple hater particularly the overpriced and over rated Mac, also Apple "people" are always like they've got religion and turned away from "evil" Microsoft

Cheers I was going to get mine on 3 as I've been with them for years and are very happy with them compared to experiences with Telstra, Optus and Vodaphone. Wont be using it out of the metro area too. :D

At least you can send MMS messages now!
Still can't bluetooth files though (which I do use often)

The iPhone, that is.

Well, I got it, I still can' t type as quick as my old phone but it's a lot better for viewing the net and is a very nice machine. Will give my full review after playing with it some more.

I send the occasional text but don't make calls often and send an email using my phone about once every six months.
Im actually paying less money now than when I was on my contract for my previous phone with a lot more credit included.
I use a phone mainly for browing the net (and also using as a modem) and now playing music, apps and videos (saves me carting my psp around).
I also want something that docks with my home theatre unit and the Iphone is the only that does it.
Couldn't be better for my needs, had it for 5 hours and love it.
So easy to sync and not a dogs breakfast like other phones when it comes to software.
I get better reception with it, and from Ive read and experienced in a short time better battery life than my previous phones.
Most importantly its the only phone that has a World of Warcraft Armory Application!!!
10/10 from me so far!
:D
Well 9.8/10 as it doesn't have two things I like, a FM radio (mind you I can pick that up through the net) and an external keypad, I loved my old Palm Treo for its keypad, will take me a while to get used to the on screen keyboard but out of the on screen keyboards I've played with its easily the best.

I heard the battery life isn't that great. Most people I've talked to charge one a day!
Of course if you turn Wifi off etc, it's better.

How much Wedgie?

How much Wedgie?

It costs me $10pm as Im on the $49 plan, also comes with 350mb data transfer a month so I don't have to pay extra on top like I used to. Only cost me another $6pm if I want to get another 500 mb a month which I might get.

I'm getting used to this keyboard now too! :D

Did you have to wait until the end of your plan?

I got a Nokia Music Xpress 5800 (touch screen also) when my contract expired. I could have got an iPhone, but it was the previous one, not the current one.

Yeah, Ive been out of contract for a couple of months and I would only recommend the 3GS version. It seriously has amazed me with what it can do.
