I've done short term contracts with the possibility of ongoing employment. When the contract ends and there's nothing for you, it certainly feels the same as being sacked. Terminology be damned.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

More so in a coaching position. Requires different terms to decribe it IMO he's been sacked.

So they took less than 24 hours to appoint him and now over 6 moths to sack him.....fair dinkum

They had some good performances (without winning) at home this year against good sides...thought they were heading i nthe right direction

The only right direction they've headed in the last 15 years is down to Noarlunga.

Unf**kingbelievable. Firstly who cares if it he was ‘not renewed’ or ‘sacked’. It’s essentially the same thing.

Whilst I’m the first to admit the W/L record under Sampson (4-29 by my calculations) is appalling, Clay has been on a hiding to nothing the past couple of years. Thrown in to the job when he was clearly not ready (the idea was for him to be taking over from Jack in 2010!), with a mediocre playing list and the usual unprofessionalism from the board doesn’t help.

Who in their right mind with any sort of reputation or experience would want to coach the club?

Time to go Kavanagh and co. 3 coaches (not including caretaker Cameron) in 3 seasons is beyond a joke. The way that certain situations were handled in recent times (Pyman, Cahill, Trevor Potts, treatment of younger reserves players etc) left a lot to be desired.

Now let’s sit back and wait for all the cheap shots from opposition supporters to roll in……yawn.

Rant over.

What a disgrace, surely Sampson was the right bloke for the job, amazing how this has panned out

So where to now for Sambo, obviosuly too late for the Eagles and Norwood job and no doubt the Port one as well, I really hope he doesn't drift out of SANFL football, too good a bloke to be lost to this league.

I will wait to see the full story. I can only think Clay couldn't committ to the job enough or we have someone in the pipeline with the most amazing credentials soon to be appointed. Burning favourite sons for little reason is not a good practice.....
Hi, My name is Ron 'Bluey' Dunn. Did you know I played in the 61 & 62 Tasman Premiership sides....

Crikey and I thought we were bad (we were  ) when it came to terminating coaches but surely after this episode they have surpassed anything we have done...
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Panthers sack coach Clay Sampson

Article from: ANDREW CAPEL

September 23, 2009 12:15pm

EXCLUSIVE: SOUTH Adelaide Football Club has axed senior coach Clay Sampson.

The club made the decision at a board meeting last night and told Sampson at 9am today.

Sampson, who was out of contract, guided the Panthers to the woodenspoon in his first full year in charge. They won just two and lost 18 games this season.

Former Crows half-forward Sampson, who played in Adelaide's 1997 AFL grand final win, took over the job from dumped John Cahill midway through last season.

South chief executive Ben Kavenagh thanked Sampson for his work with the club but didn't believe he was the man to take the club forward.

"The club's focus now turns to securing the most qualified coach to lead the Panthers back to finals football," he said.

The club has appointed a four-man sub-committee to find its next coach, including Adelaide football manager and former South coach John Reid and Woodville-West Torrens premiership coach Ron Fuller, who coached the Eagles for the last time against Sturt on Sunday

Following an extensive review process, the Board of the South Adelaide Football Club has decided not to renew the contract of current League Coach Clay Sampson.

The club's focus now turns to securing the most qualified coach to lead the Panthers back to finals football.

The Club is determined to get this decision right and is pleased to advise that two of the state's most experienced and well-credentialed football minds, John Reid and Ron Fuller, will head the committee charged with making this critical appointment.

What a disgraceful decision. I doubt anyone would take the job now. Is Kevin Sheedy available?

Interesting that John Reid and Ronnie Fuller, both recently retired from their respective positions, are involved in the process.

Maybe both will come out of retirement and Ron will take on Senior Coach, Reidy in charge of footy operations...

Surely south members have had enough of this sh!t. It's about time some of you people got off your bums and did something about this. You just sit there and watch Kavenagh and the board stuff up time and time again. You never hold them accountable. At the AGM before last you just sat there while that goose of a president (I deliberately didn't use a capital P) refused to explain the then coaching fiasco. Speak up and make these people accountable. Kavenagh can put a good spin on anything. Kavenagh can write pretty papers (Strategic Plans and Corporate Governance Statements etc etc etc) but he doesn't deliver on anything. Last year's banner "Visionary - Can Do - United" were only words. Under that banner many south people left south. Under that banner there was bickering and in-fighting. Under that banner I saw Reserves team-mates abusing each other (with their coach apparently unaware that it was going on - seriously oblivious to it!) If you haven't got the right people at the top you will never be successful. If the members are prepared to put up with this cr@p then just sit there and do nothing. If you want things to change don't just believe all the bs that Kavenagh feeds you. Stand up. Make a difference.

No cheap shots from me Saintal, I fully agree with you, esp about finding a replacement. I'd like to see South improve, and feel sorry for you as supporters having to put up with this

The only thing I am thankful for, and this is for all the WWT and Fuller bashes in and out of the club, is the strength off the field my club has shown over the last ten or so years.
