1st Semi Final - Sturt vs Eagles @ Football Park

Postby spell_check » Sun Sep 13, 2009 9:51 pm

Head to Head:
Played 51 Sturt 13 Eagles 38

at Football Park:
Played 7 Sturt 0 Eagles 7

Finals:
Played 4 Sturt 0 Eagles 4

This is the second meeting of the sides in this particular final, however it was under the final four banner. But the position of the sides after the minor round of 2003 was the same.

The lopsidedness of the head to head counts stems from the 15 and 14 match winning streaks the Eagles had over Sturt. However, now it's a different ball game, with Sturt winning the last four. In the process, Sturt has lifted the highest score against WWT on 3 out of the four occasions (from 121, to 129, then 138 and 146). As opposed to the continual close matches the Eagles have had between the tricolours and North Adelaide, this particular match up with the double-blues is the opposite. Only three times in the past fifteen encounters has the final margin been below 35 points. The average margin out of those 15 matches is 54.3 points.

logic says sturt should win however i think after todays heartbreaking loss the blues may be mentally shot & therefore it is an eagles victory imho

this week
wwt play with nothing to lose type of attitude
sturt playing with the fear of a wasted season & going out in straight sets
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Maybe so bayman, but Sturt can easily have a resolve about them and also have the spirit of '76 on their side. If that means anything in 2009.

Will Chambers be back? Nelson? Reilly? Shirley? Hentschel?

Sturt would rightly go in as warm favourites.

If I remember correctly, the win in the 2003 final was after we hadn't beaten Sturt in the minor round (or any of the other top 3 teams for that matter). For us Eagles fans, let's hope it's the same story.

Without too much thought at this stage I'd imagine that the 1st-semi this year will be a similar result for Sturt as last year.

Sorry about this, but we beat Sturt at Woodville by 1 point that year. That was the only win in that season in the minor round we had over Central, West or Sturt.

I have no doubt the Eagles are a much better 1st-semi side that the Norwood of last year, but I also wouldn't discount the resolve of Sturt as a club to come out fighting this week and I also think they'll prove that there is a gap between the top 3 sides and the rest.

Nah there's the top two, a gap, third, then another gap.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Apparently Matthew Payne's season is over for Sturt after hurting his knee again yesterday, will miss 3 weeks because of it...
