That was my first thought when I heard about this, but he's obviously a big name in Rugby League.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

No rookie players' contracts are included in the salary cap. Rookie players must be paid a minimum, but don't have a maximum.

when on the rookie list, you can't play senior footy unless you upgraded one of three ways.
1. you replace a guy with a long-term injury. that happens regularly. While you are doing this, none of your money goes into salary cap, but you must return to the rookie list and can't play senior footy when the injured player comes back.
2. if a club has no veteran players (and gold coast obviously won't when they start), you are allowed to upgrade up to two rookies at the start of the season to play senior footy. Half of your money then goes into the salary cap if you do this. Currently, there are six players across a couple of clubs who have rookies upgraded to play senior footy by this rule.
3. every club is allowed to upgrade one rookie after round 11 of each season. Adelaide used this rule to upgrade Brodie Martin this year and currently about 10 guys across the competition are on senior lists with this rule. If you are upgraded under this rule, any money you are being paid beyond the base salary for a round 3 draft pick must go into the salary cap.

You can stay on a rookie list for a maximum of three years.

Once rookie players are on the senior list, all their payments go into the salary cap.

Roger, i cant see where Tex wrote about Hunt being a rookie and if that affected him. its about bringing players across from other codes.

Also with ur number 3 point, i think this only started this year and is only in use for a couple years, so each club can get the look of a youngster earlier then they might have with the GC17 and WS18 coming in.

Karmichael Hunt will have no problems adapting because in Australian Rules football these days skill is not as important as having good physical attributes.

If you are strong, have a high level of aerobic fitness, speed and a modicum of coordination you are well on the way to being an effective footballer even if you’d never laid hands on a Sherrin before in your life.
Even if he couldn’t kick a drop punt, Hunt would be a walk-up start in most AFL teams purely on the basis of his tackling ability.

Look at Bradd Dalziell of the Brisbane Lions. His basic football skills (especially kicking) are poor but because he is uber fit and can gut-run for long periods of time he puts himself in a position to gain heaps of possession and consequently he is a very effective player.

It would be a different case with soccer which has a much greater emphasis on skill and ball control.

I disagree. If he turns the ball over repeatedly then he won't be an effective player. Yes, St Kilda and Geelong have the strong bodies, but they also have the footskills to put into place the game plan. The teams that turn the ball over often get done. He has to learn to kick or it will be a million dollars for about 20 games over three years.

P!ss Funny sledge of Rugby League by Peter Fitzsimons in todays Sydney Morning Herald:

While the NRL was once Hollywood, it is now becoming a wonderful nursery for French, Japanese and Australian rugby union, and now Aussie rules, not to mention dozens of alcoholic rehabilitation programs!

For those of you like me who have followed both rugby codes through the 80s, 90s and 00s when League used to pinch all the good rugby players (D'Arcy, Papworth, Cox, Melrose, Leeds etc to name but a few) to hear the League boys whining is karma sheer karma...
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

One area where a Rugby League player would struggle in AFL is the tackling. In Rugby League, all of the tackles are front on whereas in Aussie Rules you can be tackled from any direction. Also the need to keep running when the ball in in your area is foreign to Rugby League players.

Rugby League players haven't developed that 360 degree awareness that Aussie Rules players need. Kicking is okay, most AFL players can't kick anyway, so he'll be right at home there, and the competed overhead mark is being phased out the game so he'll be okay there as well.

It's the throwing backwards to team mates that may be a problem :)

Let's face it. All signing this guy is trying to achive is to promote the GC17 with the Gold Coast and capture peoples' imaginations. A high priced novelty act.

God I love Peter FitzSimon's column's, this musing from today's edition of the SMH is a gem:

Here is Ricky Stuart when he left the Wallabies in early 1988 to join the Canberra Raiders: ''Rugby union has been tremendously good to me, but eventually I always thought I would drift to league.''

Here is Ricky Stuart when he joined Super League in 1995: ''Ricky Stuart will do what's best for Ricky Stuart.''

And here is Ricky Stuart, writing in his column, on the news that Karmichael Hunt is leaving rugby league to play first union and then AFL: ''If we don't draw a line in the sand now, more and more players will take the money and run like Karmichael Hunt has done. Our game develops these players. Makes them stars. And bang, they cash in and rugby league is left to hold the can before they turn and want to come back. I … [understand] something Karmichael will probably never understand. Loyalty to the game. Sadly, Karmichael's decision reflects this new generation where players want what's best for them and not the team.
''

As I said previously you've got to love the hypocrisy of your average Leaguie....

Anyone hear Mahatma Cote the other day?

He reckons Karmichael Hunt has a younger brother called Yorrick ... he even managed to say the full name (with a space).

Was serviceable and that's all thats needed for this to be successful. Will probably never be a mega star of the game that would normally warrant the kind of coin he's on, but that's not what it's about, is it?

The fact that he can play the game without looking like a chook with his head cut off makes Australian Rules a viable prospect for young blokes brought up on Rugby.

The big test is seeing how Israel Folau plays. If he also can play the game then the AFL are looking justified in flinging big bucks to drag these guys across from Rugby.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Not a bad game today did some good things against the Bulldogs had about 10 possies I think.

He's also going to be the special guest on One HD's One Week At A Time on Monday at 9:30pm.

agree his game today wasn't that bad. will only get better. playing like you'd think an 18 year old second gamer would. doesn't like to kick!

(BUMP) Ok, we've passed the mid-season mark. What's your verdict on Hunt?

He is actually not a bad defender at all really with all in consideration.
Hardly disgraced himself so far and I have to respect his work ethic and attitude. Never gives up and has conducted himself professionally.
Still a way to go but within a few seasons, will no doubt become more reliable and build on the rebounding facet to his game.

I'll give the experiment a B mark overall. Not an immediate star but the potential there has every chance of being realised.

Interesting thought.
I am definitely biased here but having played both games, I reckon Aussie Rules is by far the superior sport.
And you'd think the pay rate would plummet if you went back to league, especially with the new TV deal bargaining going on.
