RD15 West def. Centrals Match Review

First, well done to West Adelaide - the better team won on the day.

The first quarter Centrals absolutely dominated, but failed to put it on the scoreboard kicking 4.6 to 1.1. If Centrals had had 7-8 goals from those 10 scoring shots, the game could have well been over at quarter time. The second quarter West had the breeze and started to work their way into the game, reducing the lead to 17 points at half time.

Centrals third quarter made their second quarter against Sturt look good. After dominating the first five minutes, they kicked a palty 0.2 (and they were two straightforward shots), then West got it straight up to their end and goaled. Centrals were a complete rabble in the third quarter. Their disposal was awful, their kicking was terrible, handballing was worse, and I lost count how many times Centrals turned the ball over.

This set up a ripper of a last quarter, and when the chips were down, Centrals defense went to sleep, with West being gifted 2 goals with multiple free players inside 50 whilst the Centrals defenders were nowhere to be seen.

Then to top it off, James Gowans lost the plot. His dummy spit was nothing short of disgraceful, and IMO he must be dropped for next weeks game because of it. It was such a crucial time of the game, the game was on the line, and he goes and does that. Then to carry on like he did in the race was disgusting. If next week's game against the Eagles is this close (and that's a distinct possibility), then we cannot afford to have James Gowans have another brain snap.

Finally, anyone know why Centrals wore their home guernsey today?

Agreed. Good summary. From where I sit, it appears just about everyone has had some days on the ground that we'd like to forget, I think everyone has been smashed at least once this year if not several times. Glenelg, who are premiership favourites in my opinion (but only just over the Doggies), had that one shocker against the Dogs, but apart from that, can't remember any other completely embarrassing moments.

Central are being flogged on the track. Great effort by the Bloods, but Central still the team to beat when it matters most.

I'm not making excuses for the Dogs and certainly not wishing to detract from Westies great
win. But did anyone at the game think CD ran out of steam after the big effort last week.
Presumably they had to dig deep to make up that big deficit last week against my mob.
Was it a factor this week or not ?
NFC suggests CD are being flogged on the track. Are they ?

As i have said before there are no two players we would swap the Gowans boys for and maybe if your team had players that played with passion you would have made more grand finals than the one this decade.Instead you have all these outside players who dont know how to win the hard ball which is required in finals which is also why Glenelg have your measure now as they are producing those quality's in there game style.
This is why it will probably be a repeat GF from last year because when the pressure is on you will choke.

Geez... toss the toys out of the pram time here... a couple of supporters say one thing about the Gowans and its like someone spat in your Mum's face or something... relax dude... obviously that one time you met us in the grannie, where you bent over and took it hard cuts deep... no matter how much crap you spin like the above, you'll never get that one back.

How about considering this: Instead of reminiscing about past glories (2002), perhaps you need to ask yourself why sturt have failed to make the big dance ever since? I would love for the dogs to get the chance to avenge that defeat but there's not much we can do when your mob have consistently fallen over when it mattered, ever since. 2002 was just a part of the journey for us, and what a magnificent journey it has been!!!!!! 8)

As for todays game, congratulations to Westies who played very well today. I thought the dogs started off well, but didn't convert it on the scoreboard and West punished us for that later on. We seemed to get plenty of clearances and had a lot of the ball in the midfield but were constantly beaten at half forward. Ryan Ferguson was superb. If they miss out on the finals this year, pencil them in for 2010.

And finally for the Gowans incident, if they are so past it and useless now, why do opposition supporters want them to pack it in???? Surely you'd want them to keep playing if they were such a liability for us! It must be just that warped Unley logic again........

Well after such an interesting read, it seems no club wants to be favourite for the premiership. Not Central, not Glenelg, not Sturt. If Westies continue to improve, they may be the show stoppers themselves!

Well done Bloods. ;)

The Bays stuff is debatable, but your comments regarding the Dogs are spot on. We have seen this pattern many times before. When the Dogs drop two finals in a row, or finish fourth or lower, will be the time to talk about the changing of the gaurd. But as long as they get their top three finish they are alive and dangerous.
This was a great result for West, I believe the Dogs do have a certain level of pride they want to protect, but in the long run I don't believe this is a game that is going to stick in their ribs,

Amen

When will another team like North or the Eagles put their hand up and challenge CD for a top 3 spot? They know they have it all but wrapped up and prepare accordingly....just like last year the difference between the top 3 and 4th/5th is massive and the Dogs use this to their advantage.....

Are Centrals laying doggo so their odds drift and they can get better odds for their flag win??? Despite the loss I still rate the dogs as faves for the flag as we know they peak for late August, September/October so something must be amiss today. Having said all that well done Westies as you can't argue with beating the flag faves and reigning premiers. You have defiantely done well today and helped your neighbouring Bays out in a big way....

We're still a silly chance for the minor premiership :D :D

No way, Bays would have to be flag favourites. The Dogs have (obviously) been the side of the last decade. This season has seen the beginning of the end of that reign. Still a great team, but the psychological dominance is evaporating.

I thought last season was! And the season before that!

Geez you don't reckon we ask ourselves that each year? Particularly last year. We're all convinced that Qualifying Final collapse was the whole reason why you won it and we didn't. As it turned out, we couldn't rely on Glenelg even bothering to be competitive. Its frustrating for us because we think we could match you, but alas we keep failing to make it to prove it, just as you said. Anyway, you can't begrudge me goading the Doggies fan after that spit... hehehe

You've got that exactly right. The Gowans twins might go off the boil from time to time or do something stupid here and there, but ultimately, any honest supporter would gladly have had them at their club this decade.

Yes he Has

It is interesting but I always thought he had to play at a higher level to improve.

Some players improve if they are left to play in the reserves, some improve if they are playing league. The trick is to work out which players are which.

It is good to see him improving. I still think he has a long way to go but he is getting better every week (as long as you take out last weeks game against sturt)

That might be true but ask yourself if you'd have them now, I think the answer would be a resounding no.

Not many Centrals fans having much to say about the game. As for James Gowans, he has rightly been showered with praise by the football public for years, so his petulant, bad loser display yesterday deserves every condemnation it gets, not only for what happened on the field, but also what happened afterwards.

Centrals dissapointing not to have a bigger lead at the first break and in that third term when held goal-less kicking with the breeze...

Great win for the Westies side and their faithful supporters who certainly were excited cheering their boys off yesterday, well done Bloods...

Phil, with respect, Gowans had already made a fool of himself well before he went up the race. To compound it by trying to attack a silly spectator just made it worse. We all have feral supporters, they just have to be ignored.

On the other hand, if Gowans showed such a lack of discipline at such a vital time in the game, perhaps some could find sympathy with the supporter having watched us get smashed by Centrals 16 times in a row over 6 years enjoying the moment ;)
