that is a good win for the young argentine. i was watching her in the hopman cup this year or last year, then she had a very strong ground stroke game but was a bit hesitant at the net and needed a bit of work on her serve. obviously worked on those things. i like seeing upsets keeps you on your toes.

anyone know who the person was that had $800,000.00 on roger federer to win his match last night ? the punter won $8,000.00 as the fed was $1.01 to win.....if you've got that much money why would you put it on something like that ? just recall the french open & nadal got beaten at the same odds
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

An online bookmaker has confirmed it has alerted tennis authorities about unusual patterns of betting on a match at Wimbledon on Tuesday. Skip related content

Betfair said the flood of wagers on Austrian number 26 seed Juergen Melzer during his straight-sets first-round victory over American Wayne Odesnik was "very visible".

There is no suggestion of wrongdoing, but the company has informed the Tennis Integrity Unit, which is expected to look into the game to determine whether the patterns were sinister or simply reflected fans' judgment that the little-fancied Odesnik, who was carrying an injury, was likely to lose heavily.

Betfair's Mark Davies told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "We have a memorandum of understanding with the Tennis Integrity Unit which allows them to see betting patterns of all the betting which takes place on our site and we alerted them to this.

"It was extremely visible to all our customers, the price moving in as quickly as it did. There was a lot of chat about it on our forums.

"So we would have liaised with the Tennis Integrity Unit and then they can make a judgment whether there is something more sinister in this or whether it is just a question of people being aware of a player who was already significantly under-rated carrying an injury that meant that he was likely to lose."

It was good to see Tommy Haas stay on court last night and have a hit with the ballkids after his opponent retired hurt after running into the umpires chair and injuring his knee.. The umpire was in the chair and everything... good work :D

The story JAS posted about the Jurgen Melzer betting patterns is intriguing. Merzer defeating Odesnik is hardly unusual or unexpected - a straight sets win would be quite expected for Melzer surely. It's certainly not unusual for players to carry injuries into games - Jelena Dokic for one, Dimitry Tursunov in both first round games were known to be less than fully fit (and in the latter's case, he withdrew in his game), so the implications suggested are intriguing.

Some good games looming in the next day or so. Federer plays German Philipp Kohlschreiber in the next round. On paper, looks an easy one for the champ, but the latter can be tricky at times, and may push Federer a little more than expected. Marin Cilic faces Tommy Haas, and Ivo Karlovic tackles Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in another very interesting matchup.

Think the unseeded Italian Tathiana Garbin can spring an upset on 20th seed Anabel Medina Garriques, and the possibility of a third round encounter between Samantha Stosur and Ana Ivanovic is brimming, although the latter has a real danger game against the tricky Sara Errani to navigate first. Unseeded Spainard Carla Suarez Navaro looks a great chance tonight of an upset win over Russian Ekaterina Makarova also.

Had a quick look to see if there's any follow-up to that news report. I don't follow tennis so only notice when it makes the main news but there doesn't seem to be anything today. This was the article on the BBC site yesterday basically the same but more detailed...

Channel 9 finally go to the match and they have it on delay  FFS if you aren't going to cover it properly let Fox do it. At least then people will have the choice of watching what they want if they are prepared to pay.
