Solid side with just the lazy eight past or future Magarey Medallists. Could have had 11 if they really wanted to lairise with McGuinness, Antrobus and Ebert all missing.
Antrobus played earlier in the year against the Vics, I suspect McGuinness missed on form and Ebert was in his final SANFL season.

Is usually regarded that McGuinness went over to Footscray at same time as others went to Vic (the big exodus after '85 season) but think he went over a year earlier so he would have already been at Footscray when this was played.

McGuinness played in Glenelg's 1985 premiership team, then left for Footscray on 1986.

Harry the Horse wrote:Correct, Neil Balme was coach. Funny how Graham Cornes has won much of the credit for SA's state successes in the late 80s and rightly so, but it was Balmey who coached SA to its first "carnival win" in 74 years. Decent trivia question that.

I remember an interview with Blighty where he mentioned he first played state footy with Harry Kernanhan and then there he was playing with his son Stephen. He said something like he realised at this point he must be getting old and maybe it was time to think about retirement.

Blighty's first State game was in 1971 - Harry's last League season. Not wanting to blaspheme, but I'm not sure he was in the same side.
