1985 State Game V WA at Subiaco Oval

Spelly in particular, do you have any details from this game?

We looked to have a pretty awesome side that included Malcolm Blight, Stephen Kernahan, Craig Bradley, Peter Motley and Greg Anderson.

Thing is, WA looked to have a pretty strong side too in what would have been one of their last state games before the advent of the West Coast Eagles, yet we trounced them fairly easily.
Do you or does anyone else have team lists from that game?

I'm sure I had the scorers, but like Queensland thread, I can't find them. I do have the scores:

S.A 7.4 13.8 21.13 30.18 (198)
W.A 3.5 7.8 12.12 16.15 (111)
Subiaco, 25831

Goals: SA - Kernahan 7.2, Blight 6.5, Cousins 4.0, Platten 3.3, Thomas 2.2, McDermott 2.1, Bradley 2.0, Campbell, Naley 1.1, Redden, McIntosh 1.0, Aish 0.1, rushed 0.3. WA - Sidebottom 3.4, Waterson, Bairstow 3.0, Mitchell 2.2, Browning 1.2, Cousins, Richardson, Wrensted 1.1, Scott 1.0, Harding 0.2, Wilson 0.1, rushed 0.1.
Best: SA - Kernahan, Bradley, Blight, Lindsay, Motley, Platten, Naley, Redden. WA - Mitchell, Waterson, Langsford, Wrensted.
Umpires: L. Argent (SA), D. Johnson (WA) Crowd: about 30,000.

Kernahan went into the game under a big doubt and played with a very bad flu.

SA team was: M. Blight (c), M. Aish, G. Anderson, C. Bradley, P. Bubner, M. Campbell, R. Cousins, R. Helyar, A. Jarman, S. Kernahan, B. Lindsay, C. McDermott, G. McIntosh, P. Motley, M. Naley, J. Platten, M. Redden, J. Schneebichler, K. Thomas, T. Warhurst, G. Whittlesea.

Solid side with just the lazy eight past or future Magarey Medallists. Could have had 11 if they really wanted to lairise with McGuinness, Antrobus and Ebert all missing.
Antrobus played earlier in the year against the Vics, I suspect McGuinness missed on form and Ebert was in his final SANFL season.

Is usually regarded that McGuinness went over to Footscray at same time as others went to Vic (the big exodus after '85 season) but think he went over a year earlier so he would have already been at Footscray when this was played.

McGuinness played in Glenelg's 1985 premiership team, then left for Footscray on 1986.

This would have been particularly sweet revenge for the game the previous year at Footy Park.

The umpire's name was Mike Ball i believe :axe:

If someone has the respective squads for the 84 game, it would be interesting to compare the personnel from one year to the next.

In the 80s the state coach was the previous year's premiership coach. As Balme coached Norwood's 1984 premiership it would make sense he was the 85 state coach.

I remember an interview with Blighty where he mentioned he first played state footy with Harry Kernanhan and then there he was playing with his son Stephen. He said something like he realised at this point he must be getting old and maybe it was time to think about retirement.

Correct, Neil Balme was coach. Funny how Graham Cornes has won much of the credit for SA's state successes in the late 80s and rightly so, but it was Balmey who coached SA to its first "carnival win" in 74 years. Decent trivia question that.

Blighty's first State game was in 1971 - Harry's last League season. Not wanting to blaspheme, but I'm not sure he was in the same side.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing but let it pass. Harry played in the 1969 AFC carnival but Blight didn't. That would have been the last of Harry's state performances, so I'm at a loss when the two ever played together in a state team.
