I think alot of the emphasis on individual stats has alot to do with the growth & popularity in fantasy comps. I can see the AFL going down a simlar path and the broadcasters will be giving greater detail on player stats.

Good call. Jumping on the AFL site earlier, the homepage had the top 5 DT scorers from Round 1 of the NAB Cup. Plus a couple of stories as to who the bargain buys are.
