SANFL Mini Draft

All discussions to do with the SANFL

Probably a bit harsh Smart Dog. Wasn't Moran injured for a lot of the season? Also they should see a lot more of Dangerfield this year. I know the doggies have done well out of the players they've got in the mini-draft, when they eventually get a pick. However I think Boyle might have only played a couple of games for us this year, but I'm not sure who he was picked before or after.

Old but Smart?, I'm continually amazed at the humility of some Centrals supporters (thankfully a minority). Time will tell with Davenport, but if he's playing for Port, I suspect Hartlett or Gray or even Pettigrew might be omitted for him.

I'd guess there's a very good chance we might see a fair bit of Moran this year. It's also possible Dangerfield might do as well.

As for Davenport, he's got a lot of competition for a spot at Port, but I wish him all the best. if he plays only a handful of games for us, he'll do nicely.

G, I know your knowledge of the SANFL is not strong, but I think Jason Davenport, Hamish Hartlett and Shane Birss are reasonable on-ballers.

Your team stuffed up again, they always pick the player thats least likely to play for them. IMO Jason Davenport will end playing for Port Power most of the year. Your should have picked a Crows player.
Your team did the same last year by picking Brad Moran in the mini draft..no wonder West are always bottom with poor decision makers running the club!
;)

Are you serious OBSD? With Tippett and Moran on our list i think it nearly ensured that we would have one of them at any given time. If it weren't for Griffin being injured we certainly would've had Moran for nearly the whole year. I remember Collins talking about a conversation with Neil Craig at the start of this year in which Neil Craig had expected Kurt Tippett to play around 8 AFL games and the rest in the SANFL with us. Davenport is likely to play some AFL games this year but i think he spend a majority of the year with us at westies. With Rodan, S Burgoyne, the Cornes', Boak, Carr to compete with i think it was a good decision to pick him up and i am happy the decision makers did so.

In all seriousness, Sturt did exceptionally well. Lee is a gem.

Agree with that NFC. Surprised he was still there at our pick.
A bit skinny so i'd say it'll be a little while until he steps up to AFL level.
Hopefully with the couple of smaller recruits we have snared, we can finally fix our forward line crumbing problems.

Im pretty happy with the Dogs getting Ricky Henderson. He is only a rookie so we are gonna get a full year out of him (probably all of it in the reserves) but at this stage we can do with as many talls as we can get.

And IF a massive IF he develops he could provide an X-Factor that few other players in the SANFL could. If the kid can learn to kick and run to the right places he could be a tough match up with his height, agility and leap.

The worry is if it has a brain fade he might try and get a three pointer

harsh - I don't think so!..Tippet & Moran were never gonna play more than a couple of games in the SANFL - they were AFL ready last year!
As for Dangerfield - you think the Crows won't play him from R1 onwards..hes just be given the Roos number, West will be lucky to get a game from him in 2009. Just poor decision making again from West Adel - and its no wonder they remain bottom of ladder!

Listen Mate, we've got a very important mission next year - to finish the decade off with our 8th flag, :D its a distraction we just didn't need - and as for the Crows well there were better options out there to draft, they didn't need to take a punt on a basketballer, they've now got too many talls in their side. They should have pick up some of the talented Centrals boys on their rookie list.

Not saying West picked the wrong player or anything like that but at times i do feel clubs undervalue the mini-draft. Essentially you are getting a recruit for free, take advantage of this clubs
Players Central have picked inclued
- Brent Guerra
- Ryan Williams
- Jonathan Griffin
These guys have been ultra good players for the club especially considering there salary is not paid by the club.

yeah and they've all been footballers, which helps our cause (not basketballers). Look I'm sure Roy will do his best, (hes a great development coach) but you just wonder whether we should have picked up someone else...or gave it a big miss altogether.

Slightly disagree in that Dean Brogan and Kurt Tippett were basketballers, Jimmy Stynes and Tadgh Kennelly were Galic footballers so there is small evidence of players been able to change codes. Given time, which he will get because he is only rookied listed he could turn out alright.

Remember the club doesn't have to put much effort into him. The crows will be doing that on a full time basis, we will just have him on a friday night training session and match day, so even if he plays one good league game for the club in the whole of his career it's a bonus.

IMHO he has the most room for improvement out of all the players :?

Have you seen Henderson? Don't write him off mate, he's got quality written all over him. You had pick 9, suriously as if you can complain with whoever you end up with! You should be happy Glenelg took Donnelly who IMO is rubbish and always will be. With Henderson you have a SUPERB athlete who CAN play the game. He will be a good player, I'm confident in saying that.

As for the Westies debate, IMO Moran will play 10+ games for West next season. Dangerfield will be 'fast tracked' by the Crows because of the punt they took by selecting him and they'll want the footy world to see him ASAP.

4. WWT - Tom Lee
5. Port - Mitchell Banner
6. Norwood - Will Young
7. Sturt - Rory Sloane
8. Glenelg - Jesse Laurie
9. Central - Ricky Henderson
10. West - Brian Donnelly

Well, 2/10 is pretty bad but I got the one that matters most right. ;)

Tippett had a basketball background and was a young tall, two good reasons for thinking he might be developed at SANFL level for a while.

Moran had played 2 games in 3 years or something similar, so why would you expect him to suddenly play most of a season at AFL level?

Dangerfield was taken at pick 10, so there was nothing to lose.

Davenport has a lot of players like him ahead of him at Port, and he's 23 and has never played an AFL games, so again I think he's a fair choice.

I am surprised that south took Mckernan as they already have Parry to ruck and had already recruited the chief, Bradley, as well as Cockshell so that would give them 4 capable ruckmen. I know Mckernan, Parry and Cockshell are more than capable up forward, which is probably the plan, but i would have thought they needed some more depth in the midfield more so than a ruckmen.

Have they still got King as well? I always thought he was a good ruckman.

Wedgie, Brett King has quit SANFL footy due to work commitments and i like you thought he could play and always appeared to underachieve given his skills. Having said that one of the nicest blokes you could ever meet.
