South Africa home and away and England away? I don't think so. Hughes time will come and if Haydos decides to kick on he's probably got this series only perhaps to rack up a decent knock. I believe it is Hayden's concentration that has deserted him. It reminds me of the latter stages of Dean Jones' career. I believe we should perservere with the experienced players due to the high turnover of players in the last two or three years but jeez Hayden's time is starting to run out.

Every Ashes tour we seem to have a new New South Wales opener in the squad. I expect Hughes may be that man. Haven't seen a lot of him, but what I have seen impresses me. I expect we'll see a lot of Hughes over the next decade.

He should be in the squad for sure. I got a good look at him in the Shield Final last year. The kid can play no doubt about it.

Saw him tonight for the first time (on TV)

He looks good but it's not a classic style he has going on there Based on NFC's comments I was expecting something like a Lara. Hughes seems more of a grunt player, for want of a better word. I want to say "slogger" but that's unfair. He looked like a more aggressive Simon Katich with a very similar opening stance and shuffle on the crease. The commentaters felt his stroke range was a bit limited with the cut shot being his favourite.

So I still think he needs more time before he could open for Australia. But that's just my opinion I haven't seen him in any Shield games in which he's obviously belting them.

Tell you what, his 22 year old opening partner David Warner looked the goods. It's only 20-20 I know but geez he was hitting them cleanly

What you saw was a game of 20/20. It hardly gives an indication of any players true game. Perhaps watch him play real cricket then make your mind up. Warner for example slogs well but can't get a game in the NSW Shield side. He's a slogger whereas Hughes is a genuine batsman. Shaun Marsh is in the same boat as Warner too but plenty of people get carried away with guys who can hit big sixes in a format designed to make bowlers look stupid.

Having said that the one thing i do agree with you on is the fact he needs more time before being thrown onto the international stage. Let him develop a little longer and he will become a star. He's only 20 so there is no need to rush him.

Cooper - LMAO, you are surely taking the p1ss. Played less and done nothing even remotely close to Hughes
Klinger - Maybe, he needs to open for SA though if he wants to be considered. Hasn't opened in a first class game this season
M. Hussey - No way (plus you're cheating cos he's already in the side). He's too important in the middle order.
Marsh - LMAO, just take a look at his record in any form of the game other than 20/20 and justify to me how he can be considered as a serious contender for a berth in even a first class side let alone an international one. Just what we need in the Test side when the chips are down is a guy who can slog 40 off 20 balls and get out
Dighton - Who? Seriously though, another slogger who is best suited to playing at the level he is at. Not good enough in any form of the game to ever play for Australia barring several injuries and desperation.

IMO Cooper is a very good batsman. Watched him live at the one dayer against Tasmania last month. The last couple in that list were just openers that i could think of. Maybe add Broad from Qld to that list though
