I'd imagine that by this time in 2009* the Crows would be able to work out whether it was worth offering him another year in 2010 or shake his hand and say "Goodbye". One year now is buying the chance of his early or full recovery, while not committing to the extra year.
I think Hentschel will get one year too for the same reason. Bassett has announced his retirement, and there is still uncertainty about the intentions of Edwards and McLeod.
