When our son was born we wanted to get a dog, but we didn't know what to get. My brother inlaw had recently rescued a mis treated (beaten by a garden hose and tied up to a clothes line) 2yo Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The first time Zoe (the Staffie) came over after Zac was born he was laying in his bouncie, Zoe walked over gave him a sniff, then sat beside him, taking gaurd, and casiing anyone who came near him. We were amazed that a dog who had been treated so badly showed the motherly instinct that Zoe showed.
A few months later we picked up our Staffie pup, Nikki.
A 2 month old dog, and 10 month old son was a bit of a hand full, a few weeks later we could here Zac pissing himself laughing, and went to investigate, there was Zac taking disposable nappies out of the box, and giving to the dog to "shake to death" was priceless, but messy. They have been inseperable ever since, and she just loves people. When our daughter was abot 18 months old, she shoved a pencil up Nikki's nostril, the dog yelped, then growled (the only time she has ever growled at a human), then realising she had growled at one of the kids, put her tail between her legs and hid behing the lounge.
After having her for 11 years I would never have anything but a Staffie now, she even shares the house with a 18yo Tom cat, and the back yard with 2 Guinea Pigs, and a Rabbit.
