Do clubs pay players purely for the on-field performance? I thought most clubs expected players to take a more wholistic approach to being involved at a club. Attending functions, trainings and behavioural standards make up part of what players are paid for and I know this is stipulated to players at our club when they sign up.

You are kidding shrekie......you're "recruits" must spend a heap of time at the club...Wilson reckons this was one of the reasons to sign there......so it was far enough away not to speng to much "time" there............

No Rotter not a Gaza supporter just have a interest in the SAAFL.

In my opinion I think the div 1 & 2 are very good standard competitions and get better each year. Although I didn't see Broadview or Port Districts games last week I know that their wins were big upsets.

In my opinion, If a paid player is meeting the expectation on the field for what he is being paid, then there should be zero complaints about what he does with his money.....

It's like saying you work at a timberyard you should spend half your pay on timber so you're giving something back...

Different if they are under performing, then the club would be unhappy that every cent is walking out the door. In my experience of Ben he has been worth every cent and maybe more. Can't put a price on some of the things he does and is well liked always by his team mates.

I would think that as a football club being a reasonable investment is a reasonable thing.

Which club did you experience Ben at?

In his early days after his first stint at South Gawler

CC, where is it written that a paid player has to spend his money over the bar to be a valuable asset to a club, perhaps he's smart with his money or has a reason.

Not sure it's written anywhere, however there is an expectation that clubs have of their players. Ben's a great lad, great player and all the other good things but my comment stands,.For whatever reason he was "careful" with his coin.

Most clubs also expect that players support their Sat night presentations,major functions, expect them to train 2 nights a week and make this a component of their contract. if they don't comply, fines are in place for non conformance.
To make comparisons akin to a timber yard is a bit off the mark, noone expects anything more than a fair deal. At your normal job you get "sick leave', once that is used your are not paid for further sickies, a footy club is no different except for the classification of sport. Some pay players good money and have expectations to be fulfilled in training and support and that's a fair request.

Read the post very carefully, there is a new paragraph started after my comment on Ben.

I am making comment in a general sense about the expectations some clubs have on their players and what might be involved, you may be involved with a club that doesn't have this but be assured, a lot do!

Henley beat Goodwood saints today by 5 goals, they'd want to give some credit to their ex assistant coach who's not only copped alot of criticism by his old club for leaving but probably hasn't realised how much he has helped the Sharks this year with information regarding the opposition.
An A grade player has been phoning him for info, re- opposition most weeks for the majority of the year as no one currently on their coaching staff would have any idea of the opposition, if it wasn't for this bloke they'd be sitting outside the 5 even though they have spent a quid to win a flag. It'll be interesting to see if they thank him professionally end of year or their just using him up.
