Which club did you experience Ben at?
In his early days after his first stint at South Gawler
CC, where is it written that a paid player has to spend his money over the bar to be a valuable asset to a club, perhaps he's smart with his money or has a reason.
Not sure it's written anywhere, however there is an expectation that clubs have of their players. Ben's a great lad, great player and all the other good things but my comment stands,.For whatever reason he was "careful" with his coin.
Most clubs also expect that players support their Sat night presentations, major functions, expect them to train 2 nights a week and make this a component of their contract. if they don't comply, fines are in place for non conformance.
To make comparisons akin to a timber yard is a bit off the mark, noone expects anything more than a fair deal. At your normal job you get "sick leave', once that is used your are not paid for further sickies, a footy club is no different except for the classification of sport. Some pay players good money and have expectations to be fulfilled in training and support and that's a fair request.
