Thats not a bad idea Buzzman !

Something different, a handicap system would be required for the lower division teams of course.

They'd be fighting for the last spot in the 5 wouldn't they? They're around the mark with North Haven, Portland and Rosewater, and surely they'd do West Croydon and Wingfield easily...

Yeah they would maybe the last 2, the 1st 3 would take care of them easily i think, Fitzroy forget they have to play away games at times, their oval is litterally a dump but they play it well, but thats only 9 times a year, 9 wins rearely gets you a finals berth.
Hmmm way off the mark there mate, finished 2nd or 3rd last year beat Luthern in prelim at their ground won the GF ok on neutral ground!

For the record the road trips from Argana to St Marys are huge, but noone ever complains, we also quite often had more supporters at Kenilworth, Plympton and the like. Make a day of it, What grass roots footy is all about. Makes comin home with the win all that sweeter too :) Go play in the Eyre Pennisula then complain about a 45 min trip

I acknowledge you've got a couple of long drives there and that your side has a fairly raw deal in terms of travel this year, but it seems to be a minority situation that could easily change next year, as has been pointed out.

Theories seem perfect until real life kicks in. I suppose that all proposed league structures would have drawbacks.

yes it is a bit of an anomaly this year and could change next year as you say..i guess all im saying is, it is not an insignificant amount of travel..it is a lot of travel..we will deal with it because we have no choice..but the bigger the saafl gets the louder the calls will get for north and south divisions..especially if some of the teams like marion, brighton etc eventually came on board

and lizbeff..your team is in the north already, where 7 other teams are already..you have to do one trip to st marys and a trip to plympton..big deal..no comparison at all..and it takes longer than 45 minutes..maybe u guys have big v8's LOL

thats the beauty of the saafl though- playing teams from all different areas of adelaide, how boring playing against the same sides every year?! i know the idea of developing rivalrys appeals to a lot of ppl but i like the idea of playing against new sides whom i havent played against before.
Seriously though, i don't think travelling 45-60 minutes to play a game of footy 9-10 times a year is that big of a deal???

do you own a business?, do you work on saturday mornings?, do you have kids who play saturday morning sport?,do you have a family?if you answered no to all of those then of course it isnt a BIG hassle..if you were playing in the b grade v gg and you live around kenilworth oval..you leave at 10.15am to be there by 11.30 so you are there 30-40 minutes before the start of the game..your game starts at 12.15 so you leave 2 hours before the game LMAO..this is not a country league..its SAAFL suburban football..sometimes i wonder :)

Are you saying that the northern suburbs aren't part of the suburbs?

Gee, imagine if you were playing Ammo footy in Victoria.

You're suggesting that the likes of Port Districts should be put in the same division as North Haven, Portland, West Croydon and Rosewater for the sake of less travel.. Hmmm...

Would be a great comp for the Western Suburbs FC
Henley
Districts
Seaton
Smosh
Portland
Haven
Rosewater
West Croydon
Wingfield
Fitzroy

This order listed will also resemble the end of year ladder aswel

this leauge simply looks like the MWJFL league is in the western suburbs
obviously wingfield not in it as they dont have juniors and flinders to be added in!!!!
get on board the thunder train!!!

Zedman , the points that you put in here are probably what has been missing in this topic ! - For some it is not a problem , and thats fair enough . I grew up playing out a Ingle farm one week and two weeks later playing at Edwardstown , and I loved every minute of every trip ! ( Now its FLinders Uni. to Angle Vale Though ) But for some - the travel time makes them unable to play and thats the problem , you cant just be availible for home games ,so you cant play...

Those things are a fact of life though. I ran out of time to play footy a few years ago, regardless of where the games were played. Eventually (for some sooner than others) time/body just don't cope with footy anymore. I found other ways to contribute to footy and have some fun, they do exist.

I would still love to be playing, but it just won't happen.

well i cant see the saafl restructuring the whole league for the sake of a handful of clubs having to travel. Its just an unfortunate position your club is in this season having to travel north once a fortnight. and yes you do make relevant points.

Not really my area of expertise because I have played in the GSFL (down south) for 20 years. However, I have always wanted to play in the SAAFL at some stage to experience the current system. I would think that the current system adds some real excitement. You get to play at 'new' venues, face different teams, supporters and opponets each year. The relegation system puts clubs in their place and adds a different challenge each year. Meaningless lower table clashes all of a sudden become exciting beacuse there is something to play for ie avoiding relegation. No system would be perfect! If you have a long road trip this year get the lads together, make the trip and smash the opposition on their home deck. You'll love the drive home!
You can love football, but it wont always love you back!

The thing the that is not being grasped here is that - the home n away season would be local , the divisional finals would be all over town , The lowest divisions would still have a Best in Adelaide Final series , just like the top divisions . But like all things , nothing happens until it is out of necessity rather that forsight , just look at the Kangaroo's staying in Melb.for an example at the highest level . Like a lot of the 'short blunt knockers 'that comment alot on these pages , It's easier to say no
than to be constructive . Within 10 years somethings will be different than what they are at present , because the distances ARE affecting the amount of people pulling out of footy before their time, in the lower grades especially .
