Thoughts on the mercy law in junior footy (10 goals in front)

1)Should this be implemented in under 18?
2) Does this law negate development of the ruck?

1) - No, I'm not convinced it's got a place in under 15's, even
2) - No, not really, as half the numpty umpires in the SFL can't even throw the ball up correctly! They still get plenty of opportunities to develop their ruck craft around the ground

I saw it in action in round 1, players weren't allowed to even stand the mark when the mercy rule was in play. It was a play on from the centre circle, had to have an opponent push up from CHB to stop the kid running it to almost the 50M line

Is there a mercy rule in SFL juniors? When did that come in? Never even realised there were any leagues in SA using it.
Have a mate that's involved in a Country Victorian league that uses it and they hate it.

The mercy rule has been implemented this season, I believe once a side has scored more than 10 goals more than the opponent (behinds not counted) the ball will be taken to the center of the ground the umpire will hand the ball too loosing side who can play untouched to the 50 and have a kick , I could be corrected but something like this.

This applies to 13/15/18 sides, scores will only show a maximum of 10 goal defeat.

Yeah, from what I saw, this was how the rule was being applied. I don't agree with it being used in the U17.5s at all

17.5 is a joke for the rule and a good argument for the 15's not to have it but 13's I think it has a place in the game...

Should be an interesting weekend of footy ahead. I've heard that Ironbank don't have an under 13s or under 15s and that their 17s are also struggling for numbers. It's an unfortunate position to be in and no one likes to see it. If they can't fill junior sides they might need to look at playing in the Adelaide divisions...although Noarlunga have held on for this long so I'm predicting there will be no change.

Falcons to get one back over Reynella as they are flying at the moment. Both teams without loss but Flagstaff Hill seem to be doing more damage and have recruited really well where as Reynella have been very quiet on that front.

Emus over Sharks
Cockle Divers over Shoes
Vikings over Saints
Cobras over Thunderers
Falcons over Wineflies

Tend to agree with all these tips. Flaggies have had a pretty soft opening so far so this game will be good to see where they're at.
Spoonbowl with the Aldinga/MV game, loser faces a long, long season.
Intrigued to see how Christies responds this week, they would have been disappointed with the way they lost to Reynella.
Ironbank put a fair score on Porties in R2, this game could be the closest of the lot.
Porties should towel up the Shoes quite comfortably in the battle of the Noarlungas.

Some interesting results on the weekend.

Sharks by a point over the Emus in a high scoring game.
Porties by a goal over the Shoes, assuming Mott did a number on Sproule, given the best players & goalkickers for the game. Much closer than I expected this game to go.
Valleys pick up an inaccurate win over the Saints, 30 scoring shots to 17 tells a story.
Cove by a goal over Ironbank on the Thunderer's postage stamp. Are Cove not as good as first thought, or have Ironbank improved?
GF rematch was a cracker, the Falcons getting up eventually over the Winies by 20 points.
I went along, and Reynella's pressure in the first quarter was elite. There was clearly a goal scoring end, game was all tied up at the half.
Tight 3rd quarter saw the Falcons still in the game and down by 4 points, and had the wind in the last. They ran all over Reynella,, Flaggies ruck dominance was key to this game, Reynella need a ruck and fast, they were absolutely smashed, with Mitchell winning the Anzac Medal for BOG. Kirk did a number on Marshman and the number of blokes the former Bushpigs can put though the midfield told in the end. Also, I never realised how egg shaped Reynella Oval is, the northern end has bugger all forward pockets!

Hopefully these two teams meet again at the end of the year as it will be awesome footy.

Port Noarlunga still look like they only have one way to win with Noarlunga a bit of a surprise. Falcons/Wineflies is a game wotrth a look on dartfish.

Round 4

Cove vs Pt Noarlunga
Both undefeated, will be interesting to see who wins this given the results in round 3. I have a feeling Porties are the much better side but at the Cove postage stamp, strange bloody things can happen.
Noarlunga vs Morphett Vale
Noarlunga to get on the board for 2025, and do it quite handily. Had a very honourable loss last week and will be looking to build on that.
Flagstaff Hill vs Happy Valley
Match of the round, Valleys would be a sneaky chance here, given they got the job done at Flaggies last year, and seem to really match up well on paper again this year.
Aldinga vs Reynella
Wineflies easily, was a great game last week and they will be looking for a big win and a percentage boost, I feel.
Christies Beach vs Ironbank Cherry Gardens
The Thunderers have been mightily unlucky in 2025, reckon they might cause an upset here. Not sure where Christies sit, I had them pushing for top 5 at the start of the year

I reckon the Saints get the Thunders on their home deck but the rest look right. The Vikings new midfield is impressive but they might get touched up in the ruck.
