If the AFL allow this all to go through but then in a year or so take away the COLA from the Swans they are going to make it pretty tough to stay within the cap. If they agree to it would it mean that they would hav to give the COLA for at least the full contract?

Welcome to free agency. Sydney have done nothing wrong, just genuinely manipulated the COLA system, legally of course. As for Buddy, can you blame him? no way, he can break down in 2 years and still get the big bucks for the next 7 odd years, probably doing Roosey's old job, :) then he can become an assistant back at Hawkland and pinch all the kids.

Its called bringing the game into disrepute mate, you should know that, thats the rule that covers any rules that we dont have that we want to have. You know it makes sense.
But the jist of it is if Franklin retires after 5 years then you must pay him out in one year within your salary cap, which is obviously impossible to do. The AFL will not let you put yourselves in this position.

It won't exist in the AFL.

Your'e either a free agent, or you're not a free agent. This isn't the NBA (or other sports for that matter)

Yes i agree, Buddy hasnt quite grasped the concept of restricted Free agency, if Hawks match the offer he goes no where hence the term Restricted DH.
If he gives us the appropriate amount of service he can go where he likes but he hasnt done that yet. Maybe Buddy will get done for draft tampering yet if he says he wont play for the Hawks if they match the offer

Buddy not much different really. Just has an amazing gift talent wise for footy. Not a smart bloke and give dumb young bogans shiteloads of money it doesn't end well. I've always enjoyed Buddy on field and what he has done for Hawthorn. In 2008 we would not have been in a position to play in a Grand Final had it not been for him. Since then he's been a very good player but has become less and less crucial to us. Very happy to have had him and the benefits that went along but honestly i don't think it will be a bad thing that he is leaving now (he was always leaving anyway just the destination is pissing people off). We got his best years, and his marketability made the club what it is today. The distraction of his outside interests won't now be the problem of the Hawks though. Good luck to him up in Sydney but not too much.

Yes.

I think it will be phased out but not over 9 years.

If he retires you don't have to pay him out in one hit if you leave him on your list.
Put him on the long term injury list and promote a rookie. Not that hard to do.

It's not hard so long as Buddy agrees to wait for his money even though he isn't playing.

Probably unlikely

So you make it a condition of his contract that in the event of early retirment remaining payments will be made year by year not in a lump sum.

The easiest solution for the AFL would have been to have a rule that states players can't get a contract longer than (5) years etc etc, would stop this issue from ever coming up.

They won't though because the AFL want to be able to manipulate every aspect of the game to suit there business needs ala if it was a 9 year deal to the GWS it wouldn't even be looked at, to the point if buddy retired early the AFL would have paid out his contract and freed the GWS salary up

From a Sydney point of view is the Tippett Frankin deals more about their on field issues or more about winning hearts in the Sydney market

It's seems to have been a dramatic change in recruting attitudes in a very short space in time
