Bullshit.

Where do they send the fine? To the owner, unless they pull them over at the time and hand the fine to the person driving they are just raising revenue.

If it were about correcting people's behaviour they would stop them there and then making sure the person committing the offence is the one who is fined.

I agree with HH3. If you wanna drive a vehicle, make sure the bloody thing conforms to the laws. Or hitch a ride and stop being a faaarking tight-arse

Where did I say you shouldn't make sure you are driving a registered car? Fact is this method will not catch the person breaking the law just the owner of the car. Unless they are serious about catching the actual offender then it is nothing but revenue raising.

ZC there are no excuses for owning a car and not registering it, especially if you lend it to someone. And they shouldn't drive it anyway if it is not registered. I hear what you are saying though. The speed cameras are definitely revenue raisers and mostly just snare unsuspecting drivers creeping over the limit, which really infuriates me

Actually now they aren't issuing stickers anymore there are plenty of reasons why people might accidentally drive an unregistered car.

Let's say a car is shared by Husband, Wife and maybe a child. Say the registration was due on the 23rd, payment is not made on this day and one of the people not responsible for the payment takes the car in good faith that it has been paid. It is not the responsibility of the owner to make sure the care isn't driven unregistered it is the responsibiliy of the driver to make sure it is registered. So at what point has the driver committed an offence that they deserve to be fined for?

Have no problem with them using these cameras on the front of patrol cars and pulling them over then and there but to fine someone because of someone else's negligence isn't justice its money making.

Its pretty easy to check if a cars registered. Go to EzyReg and you can check the rego status of any vehicle, regardless of if its your car or someone elses. I know when I drive someone elses car I make sure its registered and their insurance covers me if theres an accident.

I am not disputing the fact the driver should check. I am saying that unless they are catching and taking action against the driver then they are revenue raising, you argued they were not doing this and were attempting to catch unregistered drivers. The intention of the unregistered driving has nothing to do with the crime.

Also what if the car is taken without permission? It might be impossible to prove who was driving so the onus is put back on the owner to prove they weren't driving. Without having a stat dec from someone stating they were the driver the fine is copped by the owner.

At what point did the State have to stop proving guilt and we have to start proving innocence?

Don't get me started on the recent laws that could see you lose your house or car if a co-owner has over $10,000 in unpaid debt.
