My point about GST on good under $1000 brought on-line overseas is the fault of successive governments but the largest blame rests with the Howard Governemt who set it originally at $1000

Will it save all the ills of retailers in Australia, no but would it give them a more even playing field, yes.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Yes I agree. They have lost something. I could get help finding a suit for that perfect fit.

Not any more. Take what's on the shelf or leave it. Looked for those fellas that knew what you wanted. Nowhere to be seen.

Going down the gurgler like Johnies I think.

Only stupid young girls with no idea. Won't be back.

It's only a matter of time before Harris Scarfes Folds. :(

As far as trims goes, what ever happened to marketing and advertising.

Sure I saw a couple of adds on TV but Golly Gosh.... Spend some $$$ and you could have become anything.

I always thought it was a poor mans shop.

Although I have shopped there in the past. Generally I could get a park right out the front if I was patient enough. :D
Smile :)

It's only Money $$$ :)

What is happening to our SANFL guys...

Government's fault? Ha!

Retailers have been ripping us off for years, they have only themselves to blame.

Crazy idea, but reduce the massive mark up on product by Australian retailers, and they will be able to compete. Or how about having a bricks and mortar store, with an online component also. JB Hifi seem to do okay, running both types of store. I'm guessing trims wasn't the most forward thinking company.

TSG I've been saying the same thing for ages. I can't understand how the Myer centre is decreasing the number of retailers in the building on what seems a month by month basis, yet we go and build that harris scarfe store, full of retailers!

The business model of Kogan, Deals Direct, Catch of the Day etc, is the way to go in future IMO. People will always want to "shop" but you don't see many people in the mall with bags and bags full of stuff like we did in the 80's and 90's. All the purchasing seems to be online.

Pretty much all of my purchasing is done online and I reckon when my kids come to be the age where they can purchase clothing and goods, they'll do the same thing.

I think Trims, if they tried to buck the system (I am just on their site which says "online shop coming soon") or hold off and try and ride it out, then they were sadly mistaken.

My next question is how long it will take for shops to start closing down in the Harris Scarfe building?

Bought a few pairs of Docs there in my time, but they've become too trendy for my tastes these days.

As for expense of clothes in Oz, Mossimo is the house brand in Target US. You can get like a fleecy hoody there for under $20 that you'd be lucky to get for under $100 here. Plus the outlet malls over there are actually worth going to

Comparing a couple of items I have purchased online recently.

Star Wars Original Trilogy on Blu Ray

Amazon.com - $39.99us + $3us shipping (Actually cost me $36.40Aust total as I bought on special).

JB Hi Fi online - $69.99 + 0.99 del

Ezy DVD - $69.97 w/free del

Gonzo: The Art by Ralph Steadman

Amazon.com - $31.91 + $7.50 shipping

booktopia.com.au - $50.40 + $6.50 del

Dymocks.com.au - $71.95 + $5 del

Absolutely no reason why there should be that much difference in prices, other than the greed of Australian retailers.

Its not always the retailers, I can tell you that a retailer is paying more for that Star Wars Box set from the distributor (20th Century Fox) than what you imported it for.

It's not only in the usa that these products are cheaper.

Star Wars Blu Ray

UK - 43.09
Canada - 37.29
France - 41.61
Japan - 43.82

As you can see, we must be doing something wrong.

In the case of books being sold in Oz, I believe * that the Oz government has fixed an impost upon imported books sold in local bookstores, in order that Australian book printers can compete with overseas printers. This jacks up the price in Oz retail stores, but does not affect the price you pay US retailers like Amazon. Retailer greed might still account for some of the price disparity, but some of it is clearly due to inefficiency in Oz industry & government policy.

I have a feeling that this is also the reason you can buy E-books from only Amazon USA but not Amazon UK, or Amazon italy etc... something to do with copyright

I went to the Trims store in town today and it was closed for stocktake. Is that an indefinite closure?

I love the concept of 'iconic store'. They are there to make a profit. They can no longer do so. End of story. Some other mug gets your money.

It would bring a tear to a glass eye.

I remember Trims before I left Adelaide in 1998 as being pitched at the cheaper end of the market.
So, I was surprised when went into one after I'd come back to see they had moved into R M Williams and other expensive stuff.

As for books...
There was a particular book I wanted to read and I couldn't find it in book stores, or libraries, here.
In the end, I bought a second-hand copy from Abebooks - it came from the UK, in perfect condition, for $6.08 including postage...

The only place cheaper than Trims for RM Williams stuff was the RMW sale

Bit harsh- most work long hours just to eek out a living.
Land lords charging high rents mean retailers have to cover their overheads.

Spoke to a colleague today who as just opened up business premises- didn't jump into it, waited until the price came down to what he was prepared to pay, now the landlord has income instead of an empty shop.
Other struggling buinesses are asking for rent cuts (and getting them) for the same reason- reduce the rent i you want us to stay as tenants, or take the risk in finding new ones!
