well done to the eagles last night...

they were terrific...smashed us on every line and complately dominated for 4 quarters. how it was only 36 point sill never know.

this was the most depressing game since they flogged us in the prelim 2011

big wake up call for Norwood

Far too good last night.
First to the ball
Quick movement of the ball
Extreme pressure on opponents
Seemed a lot quicker than Norwood
Surprised they did not win by more
Loss will do Norwood the world of good as long as they bounce back next week against West in a DAY GAME FFS !

Norwood Oval always seems to suit the Eagles for some strange reason.

The AFL inclusions no doubt helped the Eagles but the things that were missing against West were there last night - intensity, quick ball movement and taking the game on. I thought Godden's move to play Sumner behind Norwood's zone worked exceptionally well as did Allmond shadowing McGuiness. Guifreda's best game for the year. The whole backline was solid and Culley has surprised me with his composure. Reckon we'll keep Vince and Smith for at least one more game and Mitchell will only get better.

Hanging out with Golden Dynasty.

Didn't go last night and sounds like a good one to have missed.

It was really disappointing to see the headline in the paper about this match: 'AFL Contingent Stuns Premier, Vince Inspires Eagles'. No no no no no no no. While Bernie was handy, there is no way that he or any of the other AFL players had any bearing on the result whatsoever. Guys like Sumner, Allmond and Rowntree had just as much impact as Vince. The other AFL players didn't stand out either; in fact Kane Mitchell made a couple of bad errors for an AFL player. How anybody who was at the match can draw the conclusion that the AFL contingent stunned Norwood is beyond me. Lazy, dumb journalism is what it is. It's fine to highlight the fact that AFL players may substantially boost an SANFL club if it's true, but it degrades the SANFL comp when, like this case, the AFL players had no particular impact.

On a positive note, a great performance by the Eagles. One of our best wins in a while given that we were playing away to the premier, coming off a big loss etc. We played good football for four quarters, and had the Legs scratching their heads for much of the night. The debutants looked solid, and Sumner and Ainger further pressed their claims for State selection. We looked especially good in space (which we should) and attacked and scored goals quickly, something that Godden rightly pointed out was important after the game at Unley. I thought everyone contributed.

Was near Fuller when he clobbered an Eagles player. Freddy will I think be furious because it was so blatant; the ump reached into his pocket straight away. The Eagle wasn't hurt but there's something very wrong if Fuller doesn't get a week for it.

Great to get 2 points off Norwood early, especially as we don't play them again until the 2nd last match IIRC, so they're basically not a factor for us for the rest of the minor round at least. Bring on Port.

Of course having Vince and Mitchell in your team helped you win. Those 2 would require Norwood to matchup 2 players who would normally play on Sumner, Allmond or Rowntree.

Totally like your review RB :D
What stunned me a little was the fact Norwood players were giving away so many stupid frees. Like stepping over the boundary line and not disguising it from the ump. hitting an eagles player in the stomach a metre away from the umpire.
Eagles weren't angels either Vince being a culprit .
For those of us who watched both seconds and league games holding the ball rule .Seems its gone out the window dropping the ball is now holding the man !!

That was a real bonus win for the Eagles. They managed to turn a very good team on paper in to a very good team on the night which doesn't always happen. Redden, Vince and Smith won't play much for the Eagles and to have them all at once was fortunate.

I wouldn't take too much away from it besides the 2 points. Unlike RB - I thought Vince had a huge bearing on the game, as did Smith. Mitchell not as much - although to be fair, he is not in the same class as Vince and Smith who are a class above SANFL level.

Sumner was outstanding playing a loose role across half back. Was great to have Allmond back and he will be an important cog in the machine throughout the year. Karpany was exciting - if only he finished off when he side stepped the Norwood player in front of the stand - would have been a great goal.

The form of Day, Culley and Thompson as key defensive talls was very good and that was probably the best thing to come out of the night as far as taking something from the game going forward.

The umpiring was rubbish. Over officiated and Norwood got a very good run of it.

If the Eagles take that effort in to next week, even with a few outs back to the AFL, it should be good enough to win.

Mitchell's first game. You could cut him some slack.

Was I critical of him? I didn't think so.

His pace and efforts are great. He is also a Sandover Medallist so obviously very good at State League level. With time I'm sure he'll be very good for the Eagles if he plays more games.

Last night he had minimal impact and he isn't in the same class as Vince and Smith and never will be. Doesn't mean he can't be effective.

Of course they were a part of the win. But does their presence automatically mean that no matter how badly they play, they 'inspired' the team, just because they allow guys like Sumner some freedom?

I'm pessamistic by nature, but I was rapt with this win. Thought we played as good as we have since 2011. That sort of performance would be good enough to beat any side IMO.

I tend to agree with both of you guys .
But I'm seeing a different eagles style of play emerging .Now my son has told me I'm wrong .Which I might be but for the life of me is that Normans or Bruce's influence !And I've noticed it firstly in the seconds or perhaps they have picked this new style more quickly than the league .
And by this I'm talking about the tackling and shutting down other teams !! Worked Friday night didn't against West .
And yes Vince and co helped the eagles win .But the run was really started by BOG Sumner IMHO!!

The best the Eagles have played since 2011 GF and really a pleasure to watch!
Unfortunately it's just a small sample of what we could and should be, but are still a long way off of being right now.
Having our weaknesses fixed so seamlessly was luck as much as anything although Godden proved given the tools to work with he's a gun!
Having Redden team with a dominant Parry was excellent to start with, Vince solved our lack of pace in the middle plus he doesn't burn the ball like our mids tend to do.
Teaming Sumner with Smith off halfback with their quickness and rebound threat was devastating.
Mitchell's ability to threaten both ways was huge even though he touched the ball modestly.
Thompson is rock solid at SANFL level and his presence is fantastic.
With Sumner almost a cert to go back to the AFL next year and these players leaving the SANFL comp with their AFL clubs to play with themselves  , the Eagles have a hell of a lot of work to do going forward!
