It happens with guys like me who use a bus or train about once a year. We have no idea what the fare is going to be. I do try to have some small notes or some coins on hand, however, if I know it is going to happen in advance. what gives me the shits is that there are never any notices at the bus stops that tell you what the fare is, and in Melbourne with the trains I never can decipher the notice about "zones".

Cr@p excuse. "I don't know what the fare will be" does not excuse cranking out a 20 dollar note to a bus driver. "I have no idea what the fare is going to be" - surely you have an idea what it approximately may be.

Re "zones" - you are seemingly an intelligent man; don't play dumb.

I am red hot on "I didn't know" PT users.

NB: I did say I make a point of having smaller notes and coin when I know I am going to use public transport. READ before you RESPOND.

I do have no real idea of current fares - they last time I used public transport was some time in about August 2004. I am usually to short on time to muck around with it so I rarely use it other than in an unexpected situation where I have no choice - like suddenly having to go somewhere where there is no parking likely on short notice. [2004 was to rush to William St, Melbourne to give technical evidence in court.]

The last time I tried to decipher the "zone" stuff it looked like Greek to me - the notice seemed to contradict itself and have more than one possible interpretation. [In fact I can read some Greek and would find it easier to understand.] No doubt I could decipher it, if I were not in a hurry and could afford the time to stand around looking at the machine and translate the verbal garbage. I could also rewrite it so it was actually in the English language and not a butchered form of it!

Some people probably do muck regular PT users about by not bothering to think and prepare when they could.

Some of us are so busy we rarely have time to think about anything but the job in hand and the one we have to tackle next. The last time I flown to a conference in Adelaide to assist in arbitration I had a 3cm thick pile of documents to refresh myself about in the 45 minute flight.

[PS: A $20 note is smaller than I usually carry, but given time I would get some $5 notes or some coin - the machines seem to have less trouble with coins.]

The "Do Not Call" register. Agencies that are exempt (charities, religious organisations, political parties) are using it as a call register as they now have all your details.

Butchered English: "diagnosed with" "different to" are NOT English.

One is not "diagnosed with cancer" that implies cancer is a tool with which you make the diagnosis. You may diagnose cancer with a CT scanner.

One thing is different from another

Absolutely correct! Full Marks!

A person is diagnosed as suffering from xxxx , which was diganosed with some diagnostic tool or test. Alternatively, a doctor might diagnose cancer occuring in a patient with a tool or test or by exploratory surgery.

That is English. It is a pity it is not taught in schools any more.

Worse are the pheckwits who want to buy their frickin' tickets with a CREDIT CARD, thereby holding up everyone in the line behind them. Often there is only one ticket booth open at the train station, which compounds the problem.

Hint du jour: at Adelaide train station, avoid the ticket queue by going to the newsagent across the hall.

My transport-related peeves are legion. This morning's inward-bound train was FULL when it turned up. Myself and many other commuters weer left stranded on the platform.

An acquaintance of mine refers to TransAdelaide as TrainsAredelayed. Much more apt, I reckon.
