Less stoppages is a good thing isn't it?

Leigh Matthews and before him Neil Kerley would have played about 60 games max over their careers if they played under today's rules. We really have changed the face of footy for no real gain

You can't say that SP. Sniping behind the play is gone, thankfully. Elbows are pretty much a thing of the past, thankfully. No one likes to see someone injured because of someone thinking their tough and belting someone. So I think there has been some benefit in changing some of the rules.

completely different argument and not one for this topic i wouldnt think.
They dont want the game to be faster anymore that was a couple of years ago, they are now trying to slow the game down with new rules (interchange restriction, less bench players etc). Surely being such an expert on everything in exsistance you would realise that Kickinit.

Maybe this might help you understand what the afl is doing.

Then some of the better coaches started to think outside the square, like Sheedy, Malthouse etc. and introduced flooding, massive numbers of interchanges, constant stoppages, zoning. These guys aren't worried about crowd numbers, entertainment and all those other issues. They just want to win footy games. The AFL's job is to make money, with TV rights and attendance's and sponsorship. No one wants to watch 120 minutes of stoppages or flooding or passing back and forward like soccer. No parent wants their kid playing a game where snipers look for their next unsuspecting victim. That's why sports like soccer, basketball, baseball etc have seen an increase in participation.

I'm sure Matthews would of had no problem adjusting. He is a smart guy. Kerls on the other hand.
