I was always taught to contest to footy and to never back out of a contest. So yes I was taught to back into a pack. The afl wants to game to be faster and less stoppages. And also to stop it turning into that fairy game soccer

Less stoppages is a good thing isn't it?

I use to think so, but surely there has to be room in the game for where the ball is genuinely a 'stalemate' and a ball up is the 'fairest' result which slowly seems to be slipping out the game.

The problem is all the rules the AFL brought in made the game quicker than ever (possibly to quick) so now they are having to make a bunch of rules to slow the game down.

The one that makes me laugh is the discussion about 'interchange restrictions' apparently the spectacle is ruined because there is to many interchanges, i must watch the game real different to anyone else because if you asked me how many interchanges there had been at the end of a quarter i would have NFI, its the last thing im watching.

completely different argument and not one for this topic i wouldnt think.

They dont want the game to be faster anymore that was a couple of years ago, they are now trying to slow the game down with new rules (interchange restriction, less bench players etc). Surely being such an expert on everything in exsistance you would realise that Kickinit.

Leigh Matthews and before him Neil Kerley would have played about 60 games max over their careers if they played under today's rules. We really have changed the face of footy for no real gain

You can't say that SP. Sniping behind the play is gone, thankfully. Elbows are pretty much a thing of the past, thankfully. No one likes to see someone injured because of someone thinking their tough and belting someone. So I think there has been some benefit in changing some of the rules.

That link TSG posted was a completely different situation to Reilly's. the North player got him with his foot. Very much like a sprigs up soccer challenge. I would have problem with a rule formulated to ban that but not what Reilly did.

I'm sure Matthews would of had no problem adjusting. He is a smart guy. Kerls on the other hand.

Genuine question,

Why are the AFL looking at making interchange restrictions such as caps etc etc.

I dont understand the need to create/trial/introduce a new rule every year?! If something is working well and has for a 100 years then why **** with it??

AFL gone too far in the past few yeara, personally I prefer watching games from the 90's than now.

As for the injury side of things, players have and will continue to get injured and there will always be an unlucky accident or incident that results in serious injury but thats part ajd parcel of being a player, its their job, they have been playing their whole lives and understand the risks FFS!

My sentiments exactly PG. Apart from the sniper hits that were a regular occurance in the early 90's (never have liked seeing that), I enjoy those games as the umpires seemed to let the game flow. You could easliy count 100 incidents that would now be called a free, that were let go back in those days.

Well you'll love this rule then. We can go and watch blokes stand around in a circle waiting for one of them to go for the ball.

It's such a better spectacle with 5 blokes sliding in to create a stoppage isn't it.

Footy is a game that didn't evolve much for decades. Up into the late 80's, there wasn't a lot of strategy or tactics. Then some of the better coaches started to think outside the square, like Sheedy, Malthouse etc. and introduced flooding, massive numbers of interchanges, constant stoppages, zoning. These guys aren't worried about crowd numbers, entertainment and all those other issues. They just want to win footy games. The AFL's job is to make money, with TV rights and attendance's and sponsorship. No one wants to watch 120 minutes of stoppages or flooding or passing back and forward like soccer. No parent wants their kid playing a game where snipers look for their next unsuspecting victim. That's why sports like soccer, basketball, baseball etc have seen an increase in participation.

Difference between sniping a player with the intent to harm and attacking the ball hard :?

What about if a game is played in heavy rain and the ground is a slippery wet swimming pool (although very very rarely see that these days), how will the umpires adjudicate the sliding rule then? Will players just soccer off the ground to avoid being penalised?

x2... Rules changes are used to make the game safer or to negate negative tactics that have evolved dramatically in the last 10 or so years. Most times the AFL get it right.
