Down the Hill wrote:Same thing happened at Fawk Res in the International vs Flinders Uni LO.C semi-final. We were nervous about International having enough control over a ground they hire to host a final and spoke to both them and ATCA more than a week ago when we were likely semi-final opponents and offered Flinders Uni in case Fawk Res. couldn't be trusted. But Inter and ATCA said game will be at Fawk. Well you guessed it, players arrive on Saturday and it had been watered the day before and a soccer trial match played on it Friday night and then it seems it had more sprinkling overnight. Bowlers run ups were mud and pitch was damaged and unplayable. Umpires said that Inter would go into GF unless we protested so we got David Heyzer down there and in fairness to him he couldn't automatically say that Inter were at fault and couldn't guarantee who would progress until ATCA investigated. Fortunately captains, players, umpires and David all decided that teams could head to Flinders Uni to play the game. We knew at least 2 of our grounds had prepared wickets for school cricket in the morning but didn't know if there were any footy or soccer trials happening. Luckily Flinders No. 3 was available and we played a 27 over match due to lost time. Flinders Uni won quite easily so justice was done but still a disgrace with what transpired.
ATCA has be a lot stronger with finals ground allocations. Clubs 2nd or 3rd grounds should only be used if ATCA is satisfied they are suitable and that the home club can exercise the necessary control over the council etc. And some of these clubs that only field teams in LO grades and hire grounds that they seem to have little control over should not be allowed to host finals.

Amazing game for us in our Semi with 8 LBW's out of 10 wickets awarded against us and 11 for the match. 6 LBW's out of 10 wickets for our grand final competitors Walkerville.
Shows you what happens when you don't see an official umpire during the regular season.

Particularly when you get an umpire who has a trigger finger. We had the guy that umpired your game during the season and everytime someone got hit on the pads it was out.

So a club informs the council that there is a game, council says no worries we'll turn the water off... council forget, power blackout and the controller resests or something and the pitch gets wet. How is that a club's fault?

Onus has to be on the home club to provide a suitable venue.
An email to the council saying "we've got a game" isn't enough.
Clubs should know personally the staff who look after their venue. Have their mobile numbers. Buy them a slab or two during the season. It can't be just a relationship through a council admin worker's email.

Would have thought it would be sorted by now but the A4 and C1 gf''s are still 'TBD' on myCricket.
Especially in C1 where the outcome will decide who hosts the gf and therefore who needs to prepare a wicket.

Feel sorry for the Fulham players of both sides, play well all year to earn a home semi final and to go out this way would be heartbreaking.
Unfortunately, ATCA had no other choice.
Bet Fulham next year will be keeping an eye on the sprinkler system come finals times!

The opposition pour water on the pitch....host club gets the blame and visiting team goes through....
